Not defending the use of Nighties, but that loose piece of clothing is hardly only in India. If you've never heard of a 'Muu Muu' google it :) they are also very liked by pregnant women because they are so darn comfortable.

Being commanded, cajoled, pushed, to touch the feet of x, y and z. All are standing, and you are lovingly or otherwise, asked to touch the feet of somebody and 'get their blessings'. The blesser and eye-witnesses then smile benignly as the seeker bends down to seek the precious blessings.

Sometimes the missing seeker is summoned from the kitchen or elsewhere to seek the blessings. And more often than not, only women are thus made into involuntary blessings seekers.

Makes my skin crawl.... it is one thing to gently guide a child to do that.. to ask an adult man or woman to do it.. very weird.

Correct! Also the opposite. Younger siblings will always be under appreciated and treated lesser how much ever they do for their families. And that starts at a very young age from reusing using toys, books and so on.

And then there will always be one lady in the family who seems to possess the knowledge about each and every small thing in life. They will always have something to say - pleasant or unpleasant but mostly a taunt. This great person is more often found at inlaws side. :smirk: Though they wont be too closely connected in relation, but definitely they will have some high life family rituals and practices followed to advise to somebody's else DIL!!

Its best to teach the concept of fair treatment for all at a young age. The situation we have is more like a demand for bending and bowing down. If someone wants to bless another with a full heart, touching the feet or not shouldn't matter. No?

Also reminds me of another Indian problem. Any random person thinks that babies and kids are common property. Smiling at a kid or making faces from a distance at a baby is one thing. A lot of them pinch their cheeks, grab them from their mothers or from the stroller or even the cradles. I absolutely hate it and till date its a huge problem. Plus anyone from IL side who comes to visit will not only touch the kids, but also insist on applying so and so stuff, give so and so food.

I used to be like that, smiled at Indians and non-Indians without any difference. Result: got invited for an MLM scheme product meeting not once, but 3 times, everytime by an Indian. Now I smile only at non-Indians. Can you blame me? I was soooo irritated when those people came to me and started talking all innocently and sweetly only to later invite me to the meetings.
