She wanted me to translate the dedication part of the book.
What Varalotti, I am not asking to translate the whole book for me. I am just asking you to translate the few lines of dedication which the other ILites are praising.
How can I say no to such a loving request! I am now reproducing my translation-attempt below. Of course I need to issue a caveat here to that good friend and all others - the original Tamil translation was written in the heat of the moment when my mind was brimming with feelings of gratitude. Many days have passed since then. And my relationship with my wife has returned to its near normal state - with the usual fights, bickerings, nagging and shouting.

I am revealing some of the secrets here so that you understand the translation in the proper perspective.

Dear Kamla,

Thanks for all those great words. Apart from the learnings I mentioned in
my post there were other valuable learnings too. For example during the first few days I did nothing in my spare time except working on the project. On the third day I was burnt out like 'Pundarikan' (You'll know about this character tomorrow in LA 7)

Then I started to relax. Seeing comedy scenes in the TV, having special ghee roast and getti chutney at the Iyengar Hotel, bike rides, car rides all became part of the project. That refreshed my mind and made me work faster and faster.

Needless to say that but for Indhu's support I could not have dreamt of a project of this size and speed. In the midst of all the writings I would lose my way and even my enthusiasm when she would say, "great job. you made Obama sing our Tamil film songs, sridhar! Good imagination!" and then I will be pepped up to write again.

I am sure the book will be well received. Not only for your writing style or because of today's bright hero Obama, but because by touching and holding it, everyone will undoubtedly feel the the magic that went into its creation by two beautiful people.

That is one of the beautiful blessings I received in this new year, my dear friend. And you know something, it has already come true. When I called my publisher on 1st Jan to wish him for the new year, he told me in a choked voice that the book has come out really well. And that I would be one of the two star writers for him this season. The other person is an experienced journalist who has completed a 200 page book on the Mumbai bomb blasts.

Another tonic which I took in large doses and which sustained my during this challenging period is your posts and the posts of other ILites.

Dear Malathi,
Thanks a lot for your kind new year greetings. Let me wish you and yours a very happy and a prosperous new year.

Now I think I will have to confess something. I did not read all the five books. I read two books thoroughly glanced another but almost did not touch the other two. I will let you know a writer's secret provided you promise me not to reveal it to any one.

In the making of a great writing information has only a 5% role. The rest 95% comes from the writer, his method of expression, his way of viewing things and whatever uniqueness he brings to the table. So when I gathered enough information from two books I was not very serious about the other three.

Then I went to the net and gathered information about Hilary's and Obama's body language and the latest scam to rock the Obama camp (this information is hot because it was published on the Net only on 14th December and it became part of the book on 17th itself) I did not strain myself much on the information side. I put my heart and soul on the expression side.

You are right about our ability to do whatever we set our mind to. This ability is universal and all of us have it in abundance. I know a lady who after having two sons (each in their twenties) went on to become a chartered accountant. She is almost 70 now and is practising in Madurai. So let's have it underlined in our minds, 'Nothing is impossible.'

My publisher has a net work of writers. He is the exclusive publisher for Jeyakanthan, Prapanjan and other giants like them It's really God's grace and my good luck that my name came to his mind when he was toying with the idea of Obama's book.

Indhu's role was not only there in editing but in encouraging me as well. In fact Marimuthu told me that this time his role in editing the script had come down significantly. My title, preface, and almost the entire book, the blurb I wrote and even the pictures I chose for the book were accepted in toto, except that one line was removed from the blurb as it was way too strong for the Tamil pallette.

Thanks for the good wishes and thanks for wishing Indhu on her b'day. Sending the translation of the book to Obama.. well, the one thing I learnt during the project was how busy Obama is and will be! Let me not make a demand on his time. (Well, honestly, I don't have the time to translate the book into English.. ha ha ha)

Once again, I wish to start this FB wishing you all a wonderful new year! After going through this thread, I am amazed and stunned as to how you achieved the impossible! You had to read the 5 books, take notes simultaneously eliminate the unnecessary ones , translate them mentally into tamil, type them out, edit and proof read (of course Indhu was there for you in this case as an angel) and then do the final touch ups! And the deadline was 240 hours!
If you had a learning experience in all this work, I too got to learn from your thread that nothing is impossible for the all powerful human mind and body provided we have the will.Hats off to the great lady Indhu for her patience and understanding.
As your publisher's confidence in you I too feel that yours would be the best book in Tamil on Obama. Now that I know how much of hard work has gone into this book ,I am sure it will reap its harvest! Waiting to buy the book!
By the way, a belated Birthday wishes to Indhu!May God bestow all that is Best in this world to her and her family! Your Samarpanam of this book to her is well deserved.
I think a translation of this book in English should be sent to Obama! He would love to read about his life from an Indian author!

Dear Sudha,
thanks a lot. One thing which hastened things was Obama's story itself. That was a typical writer's piece full of twists, turns and a host of 'human interest' elements. As I was reading his biography the "catch-points" offered themselves so easily that what I had to do was just take some hints and build my own story in Tamil.

To induce some humour into the otherwise serious stuff I introduced funny chapter headings. For the chapter that describes his father's deserting him when he was two, I used the title "பொறுப்பு இல்லாத கருப்புத் தந்தை." The next chapter talked about his mother's love so I titled it "தாயில்லாமல் நானில்லை." after the famous MGR movie song.

Yes when you were here the project was at its peak. But I could finish it well ahead of the time Preethi was here for her birthday.

Happy to know that you are relishing Ethanai kodi Inbam vaithaai.

I think to rope in somebody of Gowri's stature I have to write a 200 page book on Obama in 10 days. I think you don't like the way Love All is developing. Just kidding..

A trip to DC... that too because of the book... seems preposterous to me! But I know for sure that if at all we come there (I'll definitely take Indhu with me) we have a friend's place in DC where we can have vatha kuzhambu and sutta appalam any time of the day.
