Us Postage Rate - Is It Really $0.50 Per Ounce

I'm looking up postage rates ---- did it jump to $0.50 per ounce?

You gotta be joking!

I go to

Postage Price Calculator

Then click "Calculate price based on Shape and Size"

Click on "Standard"

Enter 1 oz

Click on "Letter"

Click on "None of the Following"

Then I get an exhastive list of mail types.

Finally I scroll to the bottom to see the following .......

Can someone shed some light on this? I don't remember the rate being so high (and I mailed in my taxes at $0.47 per ounce in April 2018)

Ounce ? America is on Ounces for weights ?
It looks like they are rounding the figures, so that it is easier to make change when someone is buying stamps.
Or... trying to encourage people to use email, and not use paper.
It is a good thing.
Although it is only ௹18 for a 50 g. envelope, people just use whatsapp to send a message. And if it is important paper, they cannot toss it in the post. They have to find a courier to deliver it.

I was sending medical documentation to our insurance company .....
