I have to attend a birthday party of our friend's son who is 5 years old.
Birthday boy's parents are very rich.
My DH said "regarding the birthday gift for the kid. Let us donate $100 in the name of this birthday-boy to a legitimate institute that works for syria people or poor people or any other good cause. and we will gift him the certificate."
Though my DH's idea is good, the boy is a kiddo. I feel, he would enjoy good gifts more than a certificate. His paretns may or may not like our gift.
They may think when we celebrate our kid's birthday that they should have not celebrated and instead donated the money to a charity.

I just feel if we really want to donate, donate by ourselves and for the boy's gift, we should give him something that he would enjoy.

I am confused. DH is pretty stubborn about his thoughts. What should I do ?

kid could expect a gift big or small. Your DHs intentions are good but whatif the parents get offended. You have the solution in your post. Just my view

The party is for the birthday child, and the gift should be given to him unless the parents have specified that is a no-gifts event. The wealth of the parents is not relevant. Give a gift/gift card according to your capacity. I agree with your thinking. Donations should be made on your own, unless the host has asked that you give to a particular charity in lieu of gifts. The thought is noble, but inappropriate for the occasion.

    My $0.02
I have had some of my friends request that we donate to charity of our choice instead of bringing their child a gift...and I have always honored their wishes in those cases ( and sneaked in a small toy/book to the child. when the child is < 10 .they are too young in my opinion to understand the gesture. )
But doing so without an explicit request from parents is kind of odd.

Thanks ILs. I just needed some assurance. I knew the answer but was not confident about it.

No question in my mind at all. Give the kid a cool gift.

Expecting a five year old to appreciate the value of a donation is asking for too much.

The fact that the parents are spending cash for a party instead of donating it to a good cause should be a big clue as to what is expected of you.

U might be knowing the parents little bit, if they appreciate this type of charity gesture or not.
    Yeah 50 -50 sounds ok.
