I think this is odious as well as ridiculous - elders demanding that their feet be touched before blessing younger people. If they really want to bless, why do their feet have to be touched for that?

    Dear Girlgirl,

Frankly there is nothing right or wrong about touching someone's feet if it comes genuinely from the heart. But then enforcing it on women telling them your husband is superior to your or you are the dil and so have to touch your abusive pil's feet every day is just not on.

May be off the track, but I have stopped touching MIL's feet & limited to only handful occasions. Reason is we have stopped communication almost altogether....also from day one the only blessing she has given me till date is "sada suhagan raho" (stay married always :-D)

    Hi Cheenu123,

How long is it since you are married?
If it's 6 months or below , say as per our tradition we are suppose to touch only for 3 months.
And that you heard the priest say "Too much of doing it will cause harm to her". :exactly:
Be prepared with this, if she reacts at you for not touching her feet, else just leave it as such.

Got an ideasmiley after reading this..

You can tell her Ma, you are so good.. You are asking me to touch your feet so that you can bless me. But by touching feet, I'll get all the punya which you have earned. So, touching everyday means you will be left with no punya.. I dont want that to happen.. So, I'll touch your feet occasionally... She'll dare not ask you to touch her feet :rotfl

The purpose of touching feet / get ashirwad is passing good vibes from one person to other. We get good vibes from elders who loves us and care for us. Without mutual love there is no point in touching the feet. Its just a 'Show'.

To avoid touching feet daily, do it on alternate days and stop one fine day completely. If she ask..tell her that you forgot. Tell the same every time she ask..she will get tired and stop at some point.

Just curious - do you guys (everyone who believes/participates in feet touching) hug as well? Or is the feet-touching an Indian version of a hug? Is it acceptable to touch elders/in-laws/parents in any other affectionate way besides feet to get these "good vibes"?

Hugs for affection, feet touching for respect (or just formality) For me its hugs first, then feet touching. I hug all those who are really dear to me (or to whom I'm dear), i.e to almost everyone from my side of family. :) When it comes to in-laws its just feet touching, that too on first and last day of our/their visit (and festivals, poojas, etc).

I would have been so glad n happy if you said you kissed your husband first thing in the morning rather touching your MIL's feel...well it is a nice thing but daily ?? that's too much...what is the need for it I don't understand ??? Are you doing this on your own accord or someone instructed you to do so...

Try giving excuses that you have severe back pain for a couple of days..avoid doing household work too just to make it look real...take a break go and stay with your parents for a day or two to avoid this daily unneccessary ritual...and maybe your MIL would too get busy with other things...and then you can gradually reduce it to a week maybe...and then only on certain occasions...all the best
