    Hi All,

Recently few of us (my friends) were discussing on the topic of sponsoring in laws when they visit us abroad. Its definitely fine to sponsor for our parents whether they are wife's or husbands's parents. But what would you do if your married sister in law wants to accompany her parents along with her kid? Do you sponsor her's and her kid's air fare as well? Anyways you will have to cover her local site seeing or trip costs but how about air fare? Would like to know your take on this.

Well it depends, on your income level and your SIL’s , how close you are ( or your husband is) ..

Personally we sponsored for my SIL and kids. Not a necessary thing to do but a nice gesture..

You sponsor everyone’s or no one’s. If you sponsor parents & not Sil then it will be an issue. Maybe ask parents to book on own , but do a separate wire transfer / send money , so it’s not evident that you paid for their trip & not Sil’s . Sorry, that sounds sneaky, but optics do matter!

But OTOH, if your Sil is nice & you have great relations with her, don’t hesitate to pay for her airfare too, if you can. That’s a rare species, I must say, so celebrate it ;)

We pay for parents, but not siblings.

Well, if i consider myself in this position say am travelling with my parents along with my kid i would never ask my brother to pay for my flight tickets. Why can't we keep relationships and financial matters independent of each other. Why always brother is expected to pay for sisters even when she is married and might be working and independent enough. So for me yes i will sponsor for the parents but not for siblings on both wife's and husband's side

well what if wife don't have a great relationship with SIL. Inlaws never spent anything for the marriage everything was taken care by the husband. They never gifted anything during the past 4-5 years of marriage. Not even a kurti. Husband has 2 sisters. once you sponsor one the expectation is to sponsor the other one or at least her kids along with grand parents. SIL also had a plan to come down with her lnlaws with out our her husband who are 70+ years and not in a great shape. So the expectation again is that we will take them around even though they said that they will take care of their expenditure that would not happen when we take them out
