Mani Shankar Iyyar is an educated person and has been at important positions. He should have known that in public life, before you open your mouth, ask yourself three questions:-
    1. Is it true?
    2. Is it necessary?
    3. Is it strategic?
Unfortunately he failed in all the three parameters.

OP, even people on this forum have had to pay heavily for opening their mouth & speaking inappropriately, then this guy is a political figure. Be it Politics or office or social circles, respect for others is of utmost importance both in word & action, there is just no getting away!

I don't know who that is. In the season of Donald Trump, whether something, or anything, is true is irrelevant, how something is necessary or strategic, would bear out in the results. The Donald won the primary election beating out 15 other candidates of his party, who were all prevaricating with true-necessary-strategic filters, and then the presidency of the USA with the judicious use of lies, shocking statements, and name-calling.
Politics could be an entirely different game (than behaviors for a civil society), especially when everybody has a vote, and most voters need an entertaining fare, not a drone. This is true in all the poorly educated nations.

Trump’s victory is & will remain an exception and a case study in the history of US elections. I still believe that he won not because of his name calling & shocking statements and use of lies, but because he rightfully strategized & preyed on the fears of the masses, shd the Democrats win again. Also people equated his shocking statements & non political background with a different approach & consequentially a different future read ‘better future’ for United States. Of course many of his voters are regretting now.

For me when he recovered after the access Hollywood tape in the Debate next night, it was the end for me!

    @HariLakhera

Agree with you totally! It is very important especially in public life. Mani Shankar Iyyar is supposed to be a highly educated person, wonder how he could stoop so low!

    Dear Nonya,
Mani Shankar Iyyer is highly educated person, been a career diplomat, MP and more you can google. He is a Gandhi loyalist.
There is a difference between Trump winning election. He was in the fray and he knew what he was talking about. He did it on purpose and the whites liked it. Mani was not in the fray. It is not the first time he said such words about Modi. He should have known that Modi will use it to his advantage for which he is too good. The timing was not good, just a few days before the second phase of election.
I do not see why poorly uneducated persons only enjoy the fun during election times. Every body, particularly his supporters were lapping up the way Trump conducted his election in a 'highly educated nation of USA'. People need fun all the time but it is for the fun maker to choose his/her words because on the day of polling people vote differently.

    Dear Naari,
Well said. We must watch our words and actions in every day life and not only in politics. In politics it is all the more necessary because there are so many slips between cup and lip till the last vote is cast. It is still more important for people whose opinion matters.
    It applies in forums also.

Harilakhera in a country where the PM does not think twice before shooting off his mouth, what do you expect from others? What Mani said in Hindi got lost in translation. What mANI SAID WAS "wOH BAHUT NEECH KISM KE AADMI HAI" This can be translated as "He is a nasty piece of work" That is criticism not abuse. PM's reaction was even more shocking. He accused Mani and Congress of colluding with Pak. The reason? Mani hosted a dinner to a retired senior Pak military official visiting India for a marriage. The dinner was attended among others by a former chief of army staff. . >Now Mani is a former diplomat who was posted in Pak and he must have made friends there So if they call on him when visiting India, doe he have to turn his back on them? Does attending the party make the ex-army chief a collaborator too. That way Modi can be tarred with the same brush for crashing into Nawaz Sharif's birthday party nand opening up Pathankopt airbase after the fedayeen attack for Pak's ISI to inspect.

    Dear Balajee,
We know our PM very well now. He can blow anything out of proportion if it suits his objective. He took a very candid remark of Mani to Gujarat to win votes. Mani should have known, smart as he is. But then he too is loud mouth as Modi is. And this was not the first time.
