It's shocking how the top management of these so called 'Charity' organizations misuse the money meant for noble causes for their personal luxuries...They should of course be paid a good salary for the work they are doing but these extra perks are unnecessary...The money spent on these perks can be used to feed and clothe so many children..Sad to know that only a portion of these funds are actually spent on the causes...

    Dear Jayasala
its a sad fact that wherever large amounts of money is involved, pilfering and fraudulent accounting rear their ugly heads, sometime or the other.

After every natural disaster, every media house announces a relief fund. Everyone who reads the newspaper or watches the TV channel dashes off a cheque impulsively , overcome by the emotion of the moment. Later, we hear nothing about how the fund was used. Mostly it is given to the Government's kitty and we know what a quicksand a government delartment is !

it is better to give donations to institutions we can actually visit and see for ourselves the job they are doing. Better still is to avoid giving money, find out from the institution what they need and donate the material ( toiletries, utensils, furniture, books, medicines, etc).

    Dear Getstrength,
    I appreciate your views.
There are many organizations like Udhavum karangal. When an organization is running on appreciable lines, suddenly some news of a defamable nature is spread through news/ visual media. All the name & fame earned in many years vanish in a second.

It is reported that more than a crore of couples are not blessed with children of their own. There are nearly the same number of orphan children in India. If every couple, not blessed with their biological children come forward to adopt a child then India need not bother about the real assets of the nation ( children). Then there may be only a handful of child care homes and the word 'orphan child 'may become obsolete.

But Govt should rather liberalise rules for adoption and make it a viable project.

    Dear Madam Manju,
You are correct. My neighbour was a nursing supervisor, married but deserted, without children was living all alone .After having a bitter experience with relatives of her/ husband's family she decided that her house worth about Rs4 crores should be sold after her death and proceeds distributed in a particular ratio, as decided by her to the charitable institutions.
I guided her in making a Will to the effect and got it registered.A chartered Accountant was appointed as the executor of the WILL.
It took nearly four months for me to visit and identify the institutions and verify the genuineness.
After her death in 2008, the WILL was probated as per Govern ment rules.

Soon after her death , we sent copies of her WILL to the institutions.
Even those so called genuine institutions were in a great hurry and telephoning me on alternate days about the sale of the property.( Panam enraal pinamum vaai thirakkum)
The house was sold. capital gains Tax was paid.
Now the problem started reg distribution of funds to the institution. Two or three people representing the same institution approached us separately seeking for claim of the share. It became a great nuisance.
With some legal background, I could sense something. We called for Bye laws of the institution, called for Board Resolution signed by all the board members, authorising any particular board member to receive the funds on behalf of the institution.
When we began to impose strict conditions, the bogus elements ran away and a pucca legal procedure was followed.
It took nearly 3 years for the process to get completed.
When the amount is small limited to one or two thousands, we may ignore things.
But when donation in lakhs in involved, the responsibility of the donor as well as the donee is equally large.
Seeing from outside it may look simple. But in practice it involves lot of legal entanglements.unless we are thorough with provisions of Indian Trust Act, we are likely to miss certain clauses which can be easily concealed from the donors.
