    They are unemployed -are they?

Rajagopalan,a purohit left his job as an IT engineer ,learnt Vedas and is practicing as a purohit. When I consulted him for conducting Mythilis last rites he said he would come home and discuss. After seeing the house in an upmarket complex his rate went up dramatically. I had no choice, with the body arriving any time from the hospital. He explained that he was earning well, was his own master and people had to listen to him instead of vice versa in his job .He is unemployed as per statistics.

I met a petite girl, well dressed in her late twenties in the lift. I politely asked her in which flat she lived. She replied that she was working as a maid in 11th floor. She was a graduate but preferred to work as a maid as she had to pick up her son from school at 3.30 pm .She worked for 7 hours and she charged 2000 Rs/ hour and in two houses she prepared lunch charged 4000 RS each. In all she was earning 18000 Rs a month. With pride she said that working couples depended on her .So saying she started her scooter and drove away. She is unemployed as per statistics.

I went for a haircut and was pleasantly surprised when the barber .spoke to me in Americanised English. In my conversation with him I learnt he left his job as a BPO employee and doing haircutting after training for the last three years. He had chosen this profession with the ultimate aim of starting a boutique. He also said getting a bank loan was easy .He is unemployed as per statistics.

We had called Abdul to check up the washing machine in our house. He said he was not free for two days .On the third day he came .changed the printed circuit board and pocketed 8000 Rs. As is my normal practice I enquired about his work and estimated his income around Rs.30000/.He laughed and said more than double of your estimate. He was ITI qualified person and worked with Samsung before becoming a freelancer .As per statistics he is unemployed.

Two ladies left their lucrative jobs and taking private tuitions for maths and physics. They charge Rs 500/hour and they have a waiting list. They are unemployed as per statistics.

Manjunath,a graduate drives his own taxi ,mostly airport savari earns well. He is a post graduate. He is unemployed as per statics.Mustafa ,an IIM graduate is the founder of ID idli batter and has built a 100 crore plus business empire Sarath Babu, an IIM-A Graduate. Makes idlis in bulk and sells to institutionanal canteens, Ramanappa,an educated fellow is one of the isthriiwallahs in our complex employing two more people. We have to remind him atleast twice before he picks up the clothes for ironing. His daughter is studying in English medium school. Another isthriwallah has two grown up daughters one a trained nurse and another pursuing catering technology course in Ooty. Call a mason, plumber .electrician .mason and a carpenter for job and you will find that they are not prepared for daily rates and quote a flat rate for a job and no bargaining please. Most of them come in SPLENDOR/PULSAR motor cycles.

To conclude, jobs do not necessarily mean government or corporate jobs.” Find a need and fulfil it’ is the taraka mantra for eking out livelihood and quite often making it big like Raghavendra.a mechanical engineer and his wife Divya,a charted accountant who founded and own the bomb blast famous Rameswaram café. In Bangalore.I can give hundreds of examples-it is time to inculcate the spirit of entrepreneurship and let employees become employers.

    Dear SLN Sir,

Those who work on their own is classified as "Self-employed" and not as "Unemployed" in the US. This classification is essential as those who were fired from the jobs or lost their jobs to reduction in workforce are eligible for unemployment benefits in the US. The government helps them financially until they find a job to stand financially on their own two feet.

Institutional employment is not necessarily the best option for many even if they are educated. Everyone is trying to maximize their revenues. Even in the US, those who are born after 2000 clearly embark on multiple income streams for which they prefer an employment that is limited by hours. They could either do two different jobs or even engage in day trading. Nowadays, social media marketing, content writing, Podcast, etc. are lucurative engagements. There are many other areas of great interest for younger generation of people. Tech people are creating so many different business models to serve the consumers. I have come across AI platform that takes care of book-keeping and I am sure this could serve many more industries. There will be time when the workforce will reduce and self-employed will increase manyfold.

To the best of my information, those registered with the Employment Exchange in their area are considered unemployed. In addition, during surveys, if self-employed people say they are unemployed, they will fall under that category.
In the USA, the unemployed prefer to work on a cash basis, so that they may continue getting unemployment benefits.

    Dear Viswa,
In the absence of social security statistics on self employed in India is sketchy.Take for example free lance photographers, caterers for marriages are making a killing.Imagine a middle class family spending between Rs 60000/to Rs 1 lakh on photography is atrocious.Opportunities for self employment are increasing particularly after Mudra Yojana[easy loan facility for self employment] has been intriduced. Now we are getting a better picture of self employed. On the one hand we hear of IITs not opting for campus interview and on the other hand post graduates applying for a peons job in Government.
Thanks for enlightening me on the situation in US .

Employment Exchange in India has lost its relevance. Here also you can see a bold display in PG accomodation "cash only accepted" .Care givers [not nurses] for senior citizens are in high demand and cost Rs. 30,000 per month besides free accomodation and food. Trained nurses charge Rs. 900 per shift of 12 hours. Dependable nurses are not easy to hire. With survival rate improving demand for such services has increased by leaps and bounds. Cash payment in US is a revelation to me. Thanks.

Home makers aka housewives are generally treated as unemployed sitting at home mom. But if we work out the cost of their services and their spouse has to pay in cash it would probably would be much more that husband earns. There was a question in indian parliament when they deliberated income tax rebate to factor in the cost of services of such homemakers and for that purpose the homemakers to be treated as earners and not unemployed!

There is a Supreme court ruling that the" role of a home maker is as important as that of a family member whose income is tangible.Infact it is difficult to compute her contributions only in monetary terms."

Interesting news.Conservancy staff get around Rs.20000/ monthly salary. With tips she must be making good money.PhD has no significance as 30% of the people educated are not employable as per statistics. Hope the apprentice scheme now in operation will help improve their skills to be employable on a regular basis.
