singing a song for dear feathers

and caw caws not to leave out the mews and bow wows...

    Hai sathya,

you made me remember my yester years by your article. In my childhood days there is to be a huge competition between me and my brother for who will keep the grains and water respectively for the sparrows. There were two huge sparrow nests in our house and we both had a great time observing them very closely.

Here i wanted to add one more interesting thing about a sparrow...
A sparrow will not accept its own hatched fledgling if it was touched by a human.Without knowing this fact my brother and me took the little one and placed it again in its nest which had fallen down by mistake...after three days we found the host dead...and felt pretty sad about it.Later we came to know from our granny that birds wont accept hosts of human warmth even if they were their own hatch-lings...except for a cuckoo.

All those things seem to be as if it happened yesterday...

anyways your article seemed to be very thought provoking:thumbsup

    CONGRATULATIONS

    Regards,

    Madhu.

    Sathya,
    Awareness creating write-up!
Sad to know about the facts that kills our sparrow population.

We have a bird feeder at our house..I can see sparrows, our State bird, red cardinal and other birds alongwith squirrels come and feed on those seeds.
    Having a bird bath too..
    Yedho nambalaal aanadhu..

    Nice Article Sathya and Congrats...
I love bird watching and your article made it a point that anyone who reads it will surely be enlightened to save these tiny creatures.
There's a belief that if u have a sparrow's nest or presence at your home, it will bring you luck...So ppl never try to clean off their nest.
These birds are so cute and their chirps really brings in happiness in you.
I have 2 sparrows visiting our home named 'Ammu' and 'Appu':)
I feed them daily , they eat rice, bread crumbs, even idly....At first they were too afraid to come near me and now they come near the kitchen and chirps and I feed them......

One suggestion to ILites, Since summer is near it wud be gud if u keep a small bowl of water in ur balcony or terrace so that they can quench their thirst...unlike villages, we scarcely find water sources in city...so these birds won't die of thirst......

    Keep writing Sathya....:thumbsup

    My dear Sathya,

Congratulations and I am so proud that you made it to the Hindu, no less.

Yet, I was terribly sad after reading about the disappearing sparrows.

Surely, it can't be so bad?! I did not realize that every cell phone call cost a precious sparrow?? I am ashamed of my ignorance.

Where we live, it is highly populated and quite congested but still, there are an an assortment of the feathered beings in my back yard and they always and always fill me with cheer. Hope the concerned authorities in our land do something to conserve our feathered population in the cities.

Your article was excellent and the cry of desperation cannot be ignored, I hope and pray.

    L, Kamla
