Thank you @satchitananda Sats. You did not understand some portions? please let me know and I will try to simplify it further. I fully agree with you at the Amazing Nature. Just Amazing.
The asteroid belt looks so beautiful in the schematic depiction. The idea of two asteroids orbiting each other is also amazing! This is something I am trying to wrap my head around. As usual, I think this is a problem with my lack of ability to visualize soemthing abstract. The 3 times around the sun for every 2 times around the Jupiter is what I am trying to figure out since the orbit around the sun would be longer than that around the Jupiter. Or is it due the gravitational force of Jupiter resulting in a severe restriction of its speed in orbiting the planet?
Hi @satchitananda I have to make a small correction. The sentence should read - It means that they orbit three times around the Sun for every two orbits of Jupiter. It means that by the time Jupiter completes two orbits around the Sun, each Hilda completes three orbits around the Sun. See if it makes sense now. If not , please let me know. I am extremely sorry for the typo, thus causing confusion. I have asked the moderator help in correcting the information in the main article. Thanks a ton, for this would have gone undetected, and folks would be going .
Thanks for that explanation, Kamala. That makes sense in a way. But I still have a question. What I understand is that each Hilda is orbiting the Jupiter, which means it is held in that orbit. So as the Jupiter orbits the sun, the Hilda would be doing the same along with Jupiter. It can't leave Jupiter's orbit out of impatience and take one extra round and come back (just putting it that way to make my doubt clear). So how does this 3:2 happen?
Hi Sats The Hildas do not orbit Jupiter, though sometimes their path takes them beyond Jupiter. If they orbit around Jupiter, they become moons of Jupiter. Let me clarify this in the article. It may be today or tommorrow before this gets reflected in the article. I have to trouble the moderator .
Kamala, thanks to my paranoia when it comes to anything to do with physics, space and abstract concepts, I try to picture things inside my head. I am feeling happy that my imagination is not so gayaa guzara as yet. I wish I had such good teachers as you when I was in school/college. Maybe abstract concepts would have made more sense then. Or maybe I was too scared of looking stupid and did not ask enough questions. Age is truly liberating!
