Dear Vijee, An occasional F B from you in this column does make me happy ! More than north, you should avoid south. All the other 3 directions are O k. My new year write up is quite short ! Love, Chithra.
Dear Chithra, The article was too good. I make my sons aged 18 and 13 read them so that they will also understand the significance and value of our culture. Your contribution in my life through IL is making me a better person.
Dear Chitra, Thankyou for the feedback. Please make the boys read all culture articles. They must know the answers for most of our " Why do we" ! Love, Chithra.
hello a story i read long back no idea if it is true... a thief was caught tried and given a punishment ............... to go around the guruvaayur temple .........108 or more.....times and sure enough he did people were watching him and there came behind him a little boy following him in all the rounds.. people tried to stop the little one.. but he wouldnt.. finally the little one said this thief is my baktha.. whenever he stole anything he deposited half of it in the hundi in my temple so half the blame/punishment is surely mine... the great guruvaayurappan himself taking blame.. perhaps this story is just to remember...... although HE takes the blame for what u have done remember you are not only punishing yourself but the lord himself.. sathya ingeyum mookkai nuzhaithuvitteno?
Thanks for bringing up pradakshinam as this week's topic which is very typical of Hindu culture. Many thanks for MahaPeriva's prescribed way of doing Pradakshinam. I am one of those that does a lightening speed Pradakshinam barring the last 'Adi Pradhakshinam'. I shall correct myself from the next time I do pradakshinam. Also thanks for the clarification - 'In case it is otherwise, always face north and only then do the namaskaram' - The main deity ParaShakthi amman in the temple we visit regularly faces east so we will have to do namaskaram facing north, with the diety in the left hand side. Interesting explanation on the clock-wise direction too. My grandma used to say that we should do everything in clockwise direction - like serving food, even filling the idli plates with batter ( the exception being twisting murukku, in which the anti-clockwise twist is supposed to yield aesthetically beautiful result!!! ). -Gayathri.
Dear Gayathri, Thankyou for the feedback. In some houses, swami padam is kept facing north. But we should do the namaskaram, facing east. Anyway, jusr remember, no south ! Murukku anticlockwise is new to me !! Love, Chithra.
Thanks for the beautiful write up on the signifance of Pradakshinam. Everytime I read ur post, it is like a refresher and I always learn something new from it as well. Thanks !
Dear Radha, Thankyou for the feedback. You feel like learning something new because, I give you old wine in a new bottle. So the taste is very mature ! Love, Chithra.
Dear Chitra A couple of more thoughts on Namaskara Just as breaking a coconut in the temple symbolises destruction of our attachment to body and surrender of Soul to Him, Namaskara also implies surrender of our Soul or Athman to the Lord. The prostrate body in a Sashtang Namaskara symbolises the body sans life. It is called Sashtanga Namaskara because six limbes touch the ground during the Namaskara, viz. the feet, knees, stomach, chest, forehead, and arms. There is difference between the way a Saivite offers his Namaskara and the Vaishnavite. Ladies are not supposed to do Sashtanga Namaskara, though I dont know why. Can you throw some light on it? sri
