Yes I did read the next line which said you are attached to people also, but are very much more connected to the things because they dont hurt you.
Just saying that the perspectives sometimes changes with various experience that happens as life continues.
Nothing wrong with saying goodbye to things (which this thread is about) , just that the statements caught my eye and wanted to write in, thanks.

I am someone who doesnt get attached to things, When I give things away or even sell them, I cant stand keeping stuff I dont need for too long, I just have a brief, "we had a good time my friend, thank you. Now time for us to part ways and go on different paths, good luck " talk and walk away with a nostalgic smile.

I could never understand why it mattered so much to some. The ones who do care are the ones are emotional people, who diligently take great care of their stuff, they are not the superficial kind at all, so all the more I could not get why "things" mattered so much.
Walking with you through with you in this post, I finally get it - these "things" are a part of you, these "things" is these are not things to you- they are a friend - silently sharing you joy, your sorrow, your hard work and your boredom. And you - a part of it. Hence it is so hard to say good bye.

So well written , made me walk down the path of the good old days.
Oh the nostalgia these words bring

Those who emigrate cannot often take all their stuff. What is left behind in parents' home gets tossed out by siblings in the usual house cleaning after one or both parents pass on.

I lost my SSLC book and a collection of old letters written on inland letters. I realized the loss only after I returned for a visit and found that I had lost it, as well as all the other papers. Went back to the hotel I was staying at, and couldn't comfort myself and reconcile to the situation for a number of days in that visit. I kept asking myself why I had left it (the SSLC book) behind. It was never needed in my life abroad; however it was an object that would have sparked joy if I held it in my hand.

I had suffered a few substantial losses (market crashes, loss of people I loved), but the loss of that SSLC book in dark maroon calico covers was a very hard goodbye.

I think this is very true
I’m very much attached to things and I’m an emotional and sensitive person.

I alluded to Marie Kondo in #15.
It is not the thing that sparks joy, it is the combination of the thing and the person holding it that creates the joy. Very few people are capable of the joy of sparking joy.

Oh yes the childhood home.. with the marks on the wall as parents marked our height every few months, and those dips and bumps in the floor that our feet knew by-heart : ). Before cell phones were common, I once returned home from an office trip to another city by train, took an autorickshaw home, and found it empty -- my parents had moved to our new house ahead of schedule, and most of the tall trees in the old one had been chopped down as they fetched a good price. Only pride or something like that stopped me from bawling my eyes out in front of all the aunties who had gathered and the autorickshaw driver.

    : )

: ) Better-half had five Van Heusen shirts from long ago that occupied prime hanger space for years though not being used, while my ethnic wear had to remain folded in a suitcase. Finally, I gave an offer/ultimatum: identify the one which one was my first gift to you or we give away all five. LOL.. he couldn't identify and we still have the shirts.
