This was during my tenure in BCBS. Usually the motto of the school was not to burden a child with too many home works. The child should be able to play and then finish a bit of study to have a well rounded development. But, being Maths I usually gave about 5 sums per day to ensure they knew their way around the subject being handled in the class. I was fed up to my teeth with the excuses I had to often hear about the maths sums not being done. It would usually be “Ma’am, I have not done my home work because I forgot about it or I am sorry ma’am but I had to go out yesterday and please forgive me ma’am, I was not feeling well etc.” This was usually with a set of boys who were boarders and they would lead up to a fine song and dance about the daily homework. I finally announced in the class one day that the person to give me an excuse that will have me stumped needn’t do the homework for about 1 week. This was for the boarders. Usually when I say this – it means hard practicals on their head is due, an assignment which consisted of slightly tough sums for weekends. My boarders took my bait and the next day all seven of them came with no homework done and gave me their excuses. 1st boarder – “Ma’am, I am sorry but yesterday my dog ate up the homework” – the reply was you are not allowed to keep dogs in the boarding so extra prep work. 2nd boarder – “Ma’am, you must understand yesterday I completely forgot about the homework, I think this is due to stress” (with a hopeful look) to this my reply was the amnesia trick has been played too many times. 3rd boarder – “Ma’am, please excuse me, I was asked to do the cleaning for the entire dorm and could not do the sums” the reply was the boys are never asked to clean the dorm, for that a person is employed. So on and so forth it went on till the last boarder came up with the most amazing excuses. 7th boarder – “Ma’am, you must understand and not laugh at me, I was up in the terrace doing my maths sum, when suddenly the sky was filled with a bright light, very bright ma’am and then this light suddenly took me up and then when I finally remembered myself it was morning.” This was simply too much for me….UFO’s in Bangalore and that too in BCBS building, my laughter rang out loudly and needless to say young Roshan was allowed to go free and not submit his one week of home work.
