IRS -Non Residents Aliens Hi friends I need help here. Since we are here for less than 183 days, we have to file form 1040NR for IRS tax purpose. This year we filed thru H&R Blcoks. They said, since we were here for less than 183 days, my DH cant claim, for 1. dependents (for me and our kids) 2. Rents 3. Medical copays IS that right?? bcoz, one of my DHs other friend said, infact he got lot of refunds, since he was earlier in USA for less than 6 months I am confused???? can anybody help me with this queries???
Re: IRS -Non Residents Aliens Did you try to take second opinion from any other CPA?? try that, they might give more clarity. Also there are some tax professionals helping with tax questions...sitting in walmart by setting up some helpline booths...try to catch up with them.. there is this website called finalysis.net (most of the CPAs are Indians in this company)....try to contact the customer care number and select option to talk to tax professional....
Re: IRS -Non Residents Aliens H&R Block hires ordinary folks and trains them so they are not necessarily dependable. You know...you can call IRS and talk to a government person for free and then you will get a dependable answer. They can also direct you to the proper forms, time lines, etc.
Re: IRS -Non Residents Aliens hi srividya thanks for the detail info. We had filed the return for this year now, since my DH has to go to india on some urgent work. But i think we can make amends i will surely take second opinion. Hi tashidelek thanks for the info dear. I am sure trying to get some 2nd opinion. I will take IRS number and call them. thanks
Re: IRS -Non Residents Aliens If you think that the return you filed is incorrect and you should get more money back, you can file an amended return. Instructions for that can be gotten from IRS or tax accountant or in your tax software.
Need tips and suggestions filing tax hello friends we filed our tax through h&r bcoz we dont no how to file or what all the required documents, we didt get any refund , we owe more than 5000 $ i dont no the reason because i dont no any thing in tax filing we gave all the documents which h&r asked us , we signed the forms which they asked us to sign. i didt like that guy in H & R he is not professional when he was entering the numbers he did a mistake and we noticed that and asked him to correct it . i gave some medical bills which we spent nearly 1000 $ but he said it should be more than 7000$ , he didt ask for any other bills even we dont no wat bills we can give. we gave some stock papers to him then that gave us a shock of we have to type the summary or he will type for us for 100$ per hour then finally we found some papers in the stock then we gave . so i decided next time its better to file ourself , but no idea where to start this process r what to do simply i have become blank now . please help me friends how to start this thanks in advance deepa
Re: Tax Day - April 15!! Tips and suggestions Deepa, Balance due or refund depends (mostly)upon on the withholding amount. If the withholding amount is low, one might end up in paying IRS. In 2009, the withholding rate was cut down in order to increase the spending in the economy. So, many tax payers ended up paying IRS. Contact your Human Resources Department, if they are withholding enough (according to your tax bracket). Medical expenses are deductible only if it is more than 7.5% of the AGI (Adjucted Gross Income). Any amount over that threshold (over 7.5% of AGI) can be deducted. Typing lots of stock details definitely takes time. But, I have never heard anyone asking for $100 per hour. That is too much! Definitely, that tax pro was lazy and wanted to avoid typing. Organizing: Keep all receipts like medical bills, property tax receipts, day care expenses (if any), mortgage interest, charity contributions, job expenses (if any) in a folder and name it as 2010 tax details. Once you get your w-2, you could file your taxes through online tax software like hrblock at home or turbotax. all the best,
Re: Tax Day - April 15!! Tips and suggestions thanks sindhu and sorry i didt reply for a long time , s u r right. the reason y we got this much of money to pay is we invested in option trading we got some profit , u know as well option trading is not a long time investment we have sell as soon as we get profit in that we have to pay some tax bcoz of short term if it is a long term % of tax will be less. so this was the story y we paid huge amt to irs . in h&r they asked 100 $ perhr to type the details but luckily we got that summary from stock person, so we didt pay that amt which they asked . we paid 214 $ for filing the tax to h&r. once again thanks for ur info sindhu thanks deepa
