    Hello Friends,

If you remember, there was an event in NDTV Imagine about seven wonders of India in collaboration with the Govt. of India's 'Incredible India' campaign. One of the 7 wonders chosen by popular vote was Tawang Monastry in Arunachal Pradesh. Can anybody share information and travel details about the place? As far as I remember, the place looked so exotic.

    Thanks

You are right. Tawang Monastery has been named 'The Spiritual Wonder of India' along with Taj Mahal and Golden Temple which has been named 'The Wonder of India' and 'Peace and Harmony Wonder of India' respectively.

The '7 Wonders of India' chosen through nationwide poll are:

    1. Sun Temple, Konark
    2. Khajuraho
    3. Red Fort, Delhi
    4. Jaisalmer Fort
    5. Meenakshi Temple
    6. Nalanda University
    7. Dholavira site.
We are hopeful that this recognition will promote Arunachal 'Tawang' tourism.

Isn't it the same Tawang Monastery, which is in news regarding the Dalai Lama's visit to Arunachal Pradesh and China issuing warning to the spiritual leader to keep off the proposed tour?

Yes Preeti, you are absolutely right. Its the same Tawang Monastry where our honored guest the Dalai Lama is put up now. Dalai Lama, the spiritual leader has landed up at Tawang on Sunday and you can say the otherwise quiet simple town is bustling with activity with national and international media awaiting to catch every glimpse of the Tibetian leader.

This Arunachal (Tawang) visit came into limelight with China sending warnings to Dalai Lama from visiting the state, which they on and off claim to be part of China. But, isn't this an irony that a state where people vote and elect their leader as per Indian Constitution are proclaimed to be China's time and again.

Well I leave you here with some beautiful pictures of Tawang....

Looking forward to hear from you. :coffee

    How to reach Tawang Monastry

Thanks Mousumi for the lovely pics of Tawang. Those indeed depicts the pristine beauty of Arunachal Pradesh - land of lush green forests, deep river valleys and beautiful plateaus. But you really have to visit Tawang to experience this paradise on land.

One of the most popular route taken to visit the 17th century Tawang Monastery which overlooks the wide Tawang Valley at a height of 10,000 ft, is the TEZPUR - BHALUKPONG - BOMDILA - TAWANG route.

The route traverses through Nuranang which offers snow and rainbow trout fishing. The Sela Pass, at a height of 14,000 ft enroute runs through a high altitude lake of crystal blue water. Both sides of the lake are decked with miles of rhodendrons.

Another important station along the route, consists of Tipi, a botanical station housing 500 varieties of orchids which grow abundantly in different parts of Arunachal Pradesh.

    How to reach there:

By Air: Nearest airport is Lilabari (Tezpur).
By Rail: Nearest railway station is Bhalukpong.
By Road - Bus/Taxi, available from Tezpur/ Guwahati and Bhalukpong.

The monastry of Tawang is located just a stone throw away from the Chinda-India border. The Chinese army had captured this area during the Indo-China war. Extreme snowfall occurs there on the winter months. Reaching there is very difficult during the winter season. But the place is a paradise. It is untouched and a virgin place. You should visit it once.
