    Hello Ladies,

I have one question about Sumangali prarthanai - my younger brother will be getting married in 2 months. So, after that wedding, to conduct pondugal, who will be the lady doing the prarthanai? Is it me or my would be SIL? Also, for "aathu ponnu" will it be me or my athai (father's sister) who sits as the main person during the pondugal?

Please explain as this is very confusing.

    Thanks!

    Padhma

I am a new member to this forum and have been since following many threads. I have little knowledge on sastras (thanks to my family) and since no replies have been made to this question for 10 days, I am attempting as far I know.

As Chitra madam has rightly said, tradition and custom vary from family and family, it is better to follow the elders advise

As regards , if the prarthanai is conducted after the marriage, it is better your mother takes all the procedural responsibilites (being elder and will also know all your father's side details), as the new DIL would not be knowing all the traditions. Perhaps your mother can use this oppurtunity to inculcate her into the tradition for future.

Second, there is a general preference for elders (in this case your athai) being offered the kalam saree, . Though many families give to "anniya " pondugal (depending on the vendudal etc..), if the saree is given to your athai , it is for the good. In certain families like ours, we give saree (even 6 yards) to all the daughters of the family, as we feel, they should go with satisfaction and VASTRA danam is always good.

Please follow the tradition of your family as per the elders advise

    Neela

Thank you very much for the reply! I asked this question because in my mother's side of the family, the kalam saree will go to the daughter of the house after she is married (which is me) and not to the athai. In my father's side - we do not know how it has been done because my paati, although alive and physically healthy (thank God for this) doesn't remember these things much due to old age and it is very hard to get an answer from her. So, I wanted to get an opinion as to what is the right way. From reading the posts here, I understand that each family has its own sampradayam and there are no set rules for this function. Anyway, thanks a lot for taking your time to reply to my query!

    Dear chithraji,
Thanks for the sumanghali prarthanai details.
Recently I came to know about the Poopavadai Panaji.
Long back smallpox death was so common ,hence a new pavadai chattai is kept in new pot, after Pooja they save it in parang till next sumanghali prarthanai is performed.
Old one visarzened in river or sea.

My friendly adviser consultant mami used to say. We must look up for yogham also.
    Marananayogham should be avoided.

But as you say each Brahmin community have there own traditional way .
But now a days. Cosmopolitan life, intercauste marriages in family ,
Children settled in US. All make us to compromise soooooo many many things.
Really at one point, feel like as Sai says ,with saradha and sabhuri,
Make it simple ,call some sumanghalis on a Friday.to our satisfaction chant Lalitha s sahasranaman,
Feed them with full payasa chappadu.,give them Thamboolam with all Soubhagya thravyam, get their blessings.
Old Madi, has gone.no helping hands at home
Cooks too says they have taken bath at home itself .says we r having madi vastrams only, promises they have come by auto.

I am not discouraging others.some are very lucky.people who have followed old coustems
And traditions have become Erundum Ketan position.

So this is how I decided todo.
