suggestions for sewing machine

I'm planning to buying a table top sewing machine. Basically the purpose would be for alterations and some minimal stitching (baby clothes and salwars)
Therefore I thought of going in for the small table top models which are shown on teleshopping. Would it be a really good idea to but this kind - usually costs less than Rs.2000/-?
the reason i'm not going in for the normal sized ones, is that, i've heard that they have to be regularly oiled and used, or else they start giving trouble.
i'd like to know if my choice of the smaller less expensive one is ok. if anyone has used this type, kindly share ur experience with it, maintenance required and if it is a durable one.
I would also like to know, if buying an ordinary machine and fixing a motor to it is ideal and how much it would cost.
