The vacation season has arrived and long distance travelling and holidays has become difficult for last minute holiday planners like me, due to unavailability of tickets.

Can anybody suggest exciting weekend destinations from Delhi?

Almost all hill stations in North India are an overnight train journey away. These include Nanital, Mussourie, and Shimla. Uttaranchal' s attractions like Haridwar, Rishikesh and Laxman Jhoola are only a few hours by car. Even the Jaipur,Udaipur circuit or the Bharatpur Bird Sanctuary etc are an overnight destination away.
    Happy journey!

The geographical location of Delhi makes it one of the most luckiest places in India from where you can visit several states for a weekend holiday. One such place is the Sariska Tiger Reserve, that lies in the Alwar district of Rajasthan. The Sariska Park is very easily accessible from Delhi. It is a 3 hour journey via the Daruhera - Alwar - Sariska route which is under 200km.

The park covers quite a large area of 800 square kilometers.
The forest is typical dry deciduous, dramatically changing with the change in season. Besides tiger, spotted deer, sambar, blue bull can be commonly seen and found in good density in the reserve forest.

Have you visited Sariska? Please share your experiences.

What a beautiful Big Cat family! Thanks for posting this beautiful picture and information. :)

I haven't visited Sariska but I'd love to. I heard of a Sariska Palace there. Is it open to public?

    Thanks,
    Deepika

Very nice picture, Hardeep. Thanks for sharing.

As for the Sariska Palace, it was built by Maharaja Sawai Jai Singh of Alwar at the end of the 19th century. Initially it was a hunting lodge at the threshold of the calm quiet and thickly wooded Sariska National Park. The palace is admired and is a site for the travelers and visitors with its great architectural works.

However, now it is converted as one of the prime heritage hotels in Alwar, Rajasthan in India. This hotel was basically built with an idea to make it an ideal gateway to the nearby forest and also to serve the nobles and the travelers to rest. So you see, it is open for public....but with a price. :)

The forest around the place is home to various birds and animals. Animals like chital, hyena, neel gai, wild boar. The tiger though is present in the area but the sightings are rare in the jungle. The forest also has a rich bird life especially around various waterholes and the lakes in the area. Hawk, Eagle, Woodpecker, Kingfisher etc are some of the bird population known here.

    Dear Friends,
I visited Chail last summer. Here are a few lines about beautiful Chail.
It is said that when Maharaja Bhupinder Singh was exiled from Shimla by the British in 1891, he built Chail – his very own summer capital. Chail is situated high above Simla, and provides a splendid view of the entire valley and the river <?xml:namespace prefix = st1 ns = "urn:schemas-microsoft-com:eek:ffice:smarttags" /><st1:place w:st="on">Sutlej</st1:place> twisting its way down.
The hill station is a perfect place for nature lovers. You can even have a glimpse of the snow – it is there till early spring. A walk through the forests of chinars, pines, deodars and rhododendrons has a magic all its own – a sweet smell hangs in the air. Indeed, Chail is a great place to recharge for tired city souls.
If you are visiting Chail, the nearest rail head is Kandaghat. From there you can take a taxi or bus to Chail. You can also get down at Kalka. From Kalka, you can take a taxi for Chail which is about 86 km from Kalka.

Adventure buffs can indulge in adventure sports while at Chail. Angling enthusiasts can hope to land a Mahseer fish at the Gaura river. Then there are a number of high-altitude trekking routes for trekking enthusiasts. The trek routes also provide scenic views all through the way. The trek routes are the Kandaghat-Chail, Chail-Rajgarh and Chur Chandini and Chail-Shimla via Junga. You can be sure of unsurpassed natural beauty along the way. In fact there is something for cricket lovers too. The Maharaja developed the highest cricket field in the world in Chail. The cricket ground offers a picturesque view of the surrounding area.
The <?xml:namespace prefix = st1 ns = "urn:schemas-microsoft-com:eek:ffice:smarttags" /><st1:place w:st="on"><st1:placeName w:st="on">Chail</st1:placeName> <st1:placeType w:st="on">Palace</st1:placeType></st1:place> is built on the Rajgarh hill and is now run by the HPTDC. Other attractions of the area include the Sadhu Pul which is a small iron bridge over the River Ashwini and the Sidh Mandir, a serene temple built by the Maharaja on a peak.
