We have doodlers, illustrators, puzzlers, poets, philosophers, scribblers (and a cameo limerick composer now) The only thing that should be 'weird' is that we have not come up with our newsletter yet! Rest everything is inconsequential and not enough practice of kumbaya during our camp sessions. We all are very different. Can we embrace this weirdness in all of us and confect something meaningful here?
Dear Jey, I agree with your liberal views on encouraging independent participation in the forums wherein overlap or duplication is not strictly weeded as superfluous or submerged by ponderous forces (forerunners of the same topic elsewhere). But within the congregants united in a forum, I've seen something strange in other sites where a BIG BANNER is slapped urging new and clueless members to lurk around awhile in the forum before posting. This rule apparently looked unfriendly. But I've realized the importance of such a rule in diverse forums hosted in the same platform. The precatory rule is to enforce conformity in speech, content and tone. Speech and tone? Yes, speech and tone of the participants, and of course content. A movie or book thread in education is different from a movie thread in "Movies" or book thread in "Books" which are dedicated forums. We are not talking of specialist topics but a level of specialization imputed to these topics in terms of speech and material represented here. Let me give you an example. When Ansuya was around, there was a strict no chatspeak in the forum. I cannot thank her enough to wean me away from such gibberish and hillybilly talk. When I joined the forum, I was that gum-chewing, spitting, undisciplined, unruly, unkempt (oh! ignore my hair for now) gamine. Today when I look back, Ansuya has been a great influence on me. If all of us spoke in our niche tongues and garbled voices then collapse of 'Tower of Babel' is what will ensue. At E&G, Ansuya insisted that we promote and practice 'good' language. 'Good' is not highfalutin or Oxfordian English but coherent and clean language. My virtual handle here is a lovechild conceived from Gauri's scientific rigour and Ansuya's linguistic credo. The topics discussed here are trending in parallel as standard-bearer and flagship themes in other forums such as relationships, general discussions, story-writing etc. These topics, when discussed here, are different because of the speech, tone, and content that aim to explore them in a leisurely, analytical, rational and dialectic manner. Hence, such overlap of discussions is healthy because it provides an ecosystem of stimulation where members are governed by their inclination to flirt with the topic in an amusing and slow-burn way (how this forum operates) or headlong fury of action (how other dedicated forums function) I've always assumed that at E&PG we are bunch of lazy scoundrels who thrive at observational humor while promoting jestful insights in education, literature, arts and Snoop Dogg.
Hmm... Am posting some scenarios which what in the first place made me in include the lines about duplicates. All the above threads are sustaining on their own, by duplicates I meant to ask, why to trend two threads on same lines with participants being the same few members so why not there be one place for us to query / verify if such ideas existed before starting a thread. Ex : When you know there is a puzzle thread, instead of pointing out later, I thought a member may put her thoughts here, ask feedbacks / suggestions / idea tweakings etc. So there CAN be a new puzzle thread indeed but new in concept, one different to the existing puzzle thread! This what I meant to convey by no duplicates, which I have stressed more than once in my replies here but keep ignoring my posts except for stormy ones!
My sincere apologies @jskls for posting your query from elsewhere but I thought its more apt here and for once this thread will serve the purpose it was originally intended for! Hope you understand and be not mad at me!
