It is certainly not a bad idea to store the cord blood (for culturing stem cells from, in case of need in future) in a stem cell / cord blood bank, at a nominal cost of 100 dollars per year.

But, friends............no one knows the long term results of this concept. As of now, stem cell applications in the treatment of malignancies like blood cancer etc, are still in its stage of infancy. A lot more research has to be done, before it can be done everywhere.

In India, in cities like Mumbai and Ahmedabad, there are more failures than successes in the applications of stem cell concept in the field of oncology. I do not have a first hand information about the practical success of this concept in other countries.

In the coming years it may turn out to be a big success..........or there are chances that it is just a bubble.......that grows and grows bigger due to sheer popularity.........later on bursting into nothing, when it comes to the actual output (of the concept).

As of now, we have to wait and watch with our fingers crossed.

During our LO birth, me and dh decided on saving the cells for Donation so that it could help out someone and had signed papers. However the doctors informed that they could not get enough of it to store so didnt collect it.

It was a disappointment to us.

Adding some more info here so that it will help others in their decision.
I was checking out some more websites generally about more information on Cord-Blood banking.

Looks like the shelf life of the cord-blood is something to be considered.

There is no way of knowing at this time how long stored cord blood will last. One study out of Amsterdam produced viable cord blood stem cells from blood frozen for 15 years. But the "shelf life" of cord blood is still tentative.

I read this in an article that mainly points out that this is just a hype and no 100% evidence. This is just the result of high commercialism and there are good chances we may end up paying for nothing.

One thing you can consider is donating the cord-blood so that if there are any matches , it would be helpful for someone currently.

We have gone for the stem cell storage and from start to finish (kit, doctors fee for retrieval, safe mailing etc) the cost came to $1300. I couldn't have been happier with my decision.

    Cheer
Your name itself is the herald of " good cheer" and in this case a very serious cheer!
The cord blood has shown great benefits to medical research because it is rich in blood stem cells. To date, cord blood stem cells have been used in treating many illnesses and disabilities besides leukemmia,; myelodysplastic syndromes, lymphomas, inherited red cell cancers Cerebral palsy and more. The dukes university ( pediatrics dept) has had some appreciable amount of success with cerebral palsy cases and proved as life savers where cord blood stem cells were infused into the blood stream.
May I do the least I can towards this info. article by nominating this to the finest post sept. 2012
