This statement bespeaks of Tamil poet & lyricist Kannadasan’s saying:
When followers of other religion - carry concealed arms, gun, pistol, sword et al to protect their religion/& their God, Hindu Gods & Godesses carry weapons in their hands to protect their devotees.

A religion, whatever it is, should help the man to inquire, determine and tread the right path, is my view. Most religious practices are manmade. Religious practices that doesn't have tolerance for other religious beliefs is faulted. But man interprets the religion as he pleases in order to emphasize the importance of his religion or even criticize the religion. I believe true purpose of the religion must be to unite the humanity with the divinity and that can't be exclusive of other beings in the world.

A good example is what @Thyagarajan Sir quoted Kannadasan's words. When a man carries the weapon in person, his intention can be either to defend himself or to kill another being. The intention of a man is subject to freewill. However, if you read the Puranas or Scriptures the God's bearing weapons only to kill the evil. They don't perform actions for themselves but to save other beings. Many interprets Lord Krishna's devious methods to kill Bhisma, Drona and Karna as bad but as they stood strongly for the evil, the Lord had no option but to kill them in order to establish righteousness.
