    Hi SLV...

My DS is 29 months old. I was reading other IL's posts so it made me little worried about my son speech progress. If you could please go through the points and advice me.

When my DS was 24 months his vocab was between 50 word or little more but just in last couple of months I notice some change, he is using more words may be around 150-200 rarely use two words. He make a good eye contact and follow a simple conversation and understand the direction easily (except no hitting or bitting...well that is another issue). But when he needs something he use one word. And always say "NO" to everything even if he mean it yes. He like to start conversation sometime but not in sentences usually blabber without any pause.

He learns things fast and recognise like Upper or lower abc, numbers 1-20, colors, shapes, body parts or sing couple of rhymes not clear though. He can tell few words from book by sight. He loves to read his favourite books repeatdly.

He doesn't make "Role play". He plays with his toys and when he is bored throw it thats his favourite activity.

He doesn't know how to play with other kids. He doesn't go to day care except weekend gathering. Where he doesn't mingle with other kids besides hitting or most of the time play alone.

He is not fully potty trained yet, 50% of the time he tells me if he has to use toilet.

I am answring couple of your questions too.

    For Listening

Follow 1-2 simple directions in a sequence
yes he is able follow instructions like swich on/off the light, lets go out, put on your clothes, pick up the toys etc. like small sentences.

Listen to and understand age-appropriate stories read aloud
    yes

    Follow a simple conversation
sometimes he understand but not always

    SPEAKING

    Be understood by most people
    NO
    Answer simple "yes/no" questions
Always says "NO" even if he mean it yes.

    Answer open-ended questions (e.g.,
"What did you have for lunch today?")
    NO
Retell a story or talk about an event
    NO
    Participate appropriately in conversations
    NO
Show interest in and start conversations
    YES but Blabbers without pause.

    READING

Know how a book works (e.g., read from left to right and top to bottom in English)
    YES
Understand that spoken words are made up of sounds
    YES
Identify words that rhyme (e.g., cat and hat)
    NO
Compare and match words based on their sounds
    NO
Understand that letters represent speech sounds and match sounds to letters
    NO
    Identify upper- and lowercase letters
    YES
    Recognize some words by sight
    YES
"Read" a few picture books from memory
    YES
Imitate reading by talking about pictures in a book
    NO

SLV, please advice me if I need to do more or he will catch up eventually. Thank you.

    Ami

    Dear SLV,

I would like to know about my son, who is now 18months completed.
He is 1 month early born, He mainly eats mashed food only.

Some information about his eating habits.
few months back he used to bite and eat banana and biscuit. then he stopped that. He is a picky eater, feeding is a big struggle to us, as it always takes more than 1 hour and more. Always need to force him for eating.

About his talking, he can recognise me and call as amma, then he says words amma, avva, appa, accha, ajja, ooh aah, anna. He points to everything then asks about it. I try to teach him new words he listens but dont say it.

I read him fruits n some other books. he points to some pictures when i ask him to show. he understands simple instructions.

For his age is this normal for speech? And he is not biting the food. should i be worried about it? can you please give some suggestions.

    Thank you for helping.

As of now (from what you say) I don't see any concerns about his speech.

One suggestion- Book on fruits/animals/vehicles...........they contribute to building vocabulary but not much of creativity. So you need to provide him (as example/model) that quality and standard of speech that you expect from him.
You seem to be teaching him names of objects and he answers them in single words....how much more creative can a child of his age be when you point to an apple and ask "what is this?"
Do talk more to the child, more descriptive and elaborate. He seems to be learning well.
Keep a count on the number of words he knows and check after 3mths. It should have almost doubled.

Eating- am not a right person for this.
But my suggestion would be- slowly start changing the consistency of food. May be two meals mashed and third meal-less mashed. Please don't try this when he is very hungry, try it out at other times and yes, you may need to do a lot of motivating for him to try out and accept the new consistency.

Do check with his Pediatrician they sure will have better ideas to help you.

    Good Luck!

Am Glad i could be of help.

I really appreciate your DD's efforts at keeping up with communication in whatever mode she can. It means to say that she is interested in communication.
Don't let her get away with it every time. You can provide the words for her actions and help her repeat them. She may take time to do this too, but it will surely add to her vocabulary.
Do voice for her so that she is listening to more and more new words and sentence structures. Its like a bombardment of speech that you do for her and eventually she'll start too...............and then you'll need to ask them to give you a break from their chatting!!!

    Happy Parenting!!

Am glad you wrote about it all right in your first post and it really helps me to help you.

As of now i don't see any concerns other than a slightly inadequate social skills. But then that's no issue or problem. Am raising a point only to help the child build a good rapport with peers. It'll help him when he joins nursery in the future.

If you wish to, you can make it better for him.

    1. Do initiate role plays with him. make sure you are exchanging lots of dialogues during this play. At the beginning you may have to speak for both the characters, slowly shift responsibilities and see how he performs. Keep activity, characters and roles same for over a weak so that he gets to use what he learns and slowly introduce slight modifications in the act (total change of roles and activities would distract the child again) and keep it going. Make this a 15-20min game everyday. You could also involve DH and siblings/friends/peers if any and make it more interesting.

    2. A couple of times when the child says "No" and he means to say yes, don't give him what he wants (not like a punishment or anything), this would help him to understand what it means to say no. He may cry, don't give it immediately then. Give him a moment and then try explain and ask him to answer again, help him say Yes and then give him. You may need to do this many times in a day over a week. If he gets to appreciate the difference he'll slowly look for alternative words to express likes and approval. This will take a while, but do try.

    3. You need to help him make friends. Many parents have this issue here. If a child is not communicating enough, he is sure to miss out on socialization. As a parent you need to stand for the child and help him make friends. Help him strike conversation, use his friends' names in conversation/narrations/stories and help the child relate to them.

    4. I personally don't like kids throwing away toys after playing. My niece is around the same age as your DS and she does it too. But yes, if you make an attempt to help them understand better activities and structure, they may change. Do play lot more meaningful games with your child. While playing, add a lot of commentary, keep talking and describing things, am sure he will get to learn more words and this would sure increase his interest in communication.

Like i have told many others here. You can keep a count on the number of words he knows now, try more speech stimulating activities for 3months and then look for differences. This would give you a hint if there is progress for good or a clue if you need to seek help.

    Good Luck!

    Dear SLV,

Thank you very much for all the details that you have given.
As you said i think i need to be more descriptive while showing the books.

he dont say the names of fruits in book.
when i ask him like " where is fish? where is ball show to me" on a page with few pictures on it then he correctly points to that e.g ball, flower, sofa picture that we are teaching to him everyday.

when he want to ask something he points and asks " aah ? then we tell him about it. that's his way of communication.

    Regards,
