    My dear Chitra,
Thank you very much for posting the potris in English. Yes I will ask M for help in terms of pronunciation. Thankyou is a small word but I mean it from the bottom of my heart. I missed chanting it today since I logged in late but will still do so tomorrow since God will not mind:) I love having it in English.
    Love,

    Thanks a bunch.

    Hi Mrs.CV,

Earlier this evening, did abishegam to Lord Shiva followed by pooja having my kids around. It was very nice becoz, every Friday, use to do santhoshi matha pooja. So, today, did pooja for both Thatha & Pethi!!!

And, have a doubt-next to Lord Satyanarayana, why they have kept Lord Shiva idol too in the temple??

    Rgds.

Re: Shivan 108 Potris in Tami and English fonts

    My dear Ami,
I only know that Sathyanarayana is another form of Lord Vishnu. I really do not know the significance of keeping the idol of Shiva next to the above.
Sorry, I am not able to help you.
    Love,
    Chithra.

Re: Shivan 108 Potris in Tami and English fonts

    May I butt in?

    Dear Mohana,

I read your query about the significance of the number 108. I have heard numerous explanations, and each of them is really very interesting to know. As we read, we realize what great geniuses our ancestors were, to come up with such complex mathematical operations.

    Here are some of them.

    1. Sanskrit language has 54 alphabets. Each of the alphabets have masculine and feminine forms (ie Shiva and Shakti Roopams), so 54X2 = 108.

    2. In the Sri Yantra, there are marmas where 3 lines intersect. There are 54 such intersections. Again, each of these intersections have Shiva and Shakti roopams, so 54x2 = 108.

    3. There are 12 constellations and 9 planets :12x9 = 108

    4. The diameter of the Sun is 108 times the diameter of the earth.

    5. There are 108 Upanishads counting all the upanishads in each of the Vedas (Rig - 10, Yajur - 50, Sama - 16 , Atharvaana - 32)

    6. There are 108 forms of dance.

    7. Lord Krishna had 108 Gopis.

    8. When Lord Shiva pulled his beloved Sati out of Dhaksha's sacrificial fire and descended towards heaven, 108 bits of Sati's body fell on the earth. Each of these places where they fell have a Shakti Peetam. (It is believed that Samayapuram near Trichy is the Peetam where Shakti's eyes fell. )

    9. 1 to 1st power=1; 2 to 2nd power=4 (2x2); 3 to 3rd power=27 (3x3x3). 1x4x27=108.

    10. There is also a very complex calculation with numbers that form the elements of the universe and arrives at 10800. It takes into consideration the five elements(5), the circle of life (360 degrees), 12 months or 12 horas, 27 nakshatras, 3 attributes of time and arrives at 10800 (360 X 30). 10800 is also called Purna or the complete. The last two zeros are dropped and we believe that the total universe can be represented by this number of 108. So as devotees we believe that by offering 108, we show the ultimate respect to the Universe.

Since Buddhism, Jainism and Sikhism were derived from Hinduism, they attach a lot of importance to the number 108.

    Hope this helps.

    Regards
    Vidya
