Dear Friends, Since I am from Madurai, the name Saurashtras, makes me so nostalgic ! My friends & classmates in St Josph's Convent & American college were mainly saurashtras. A P Sarathy's daughter ( Sabitha), A H S family girls were all my close friends. My class mate & close friend in school days, was Sita, N M R Subbaraman's daughter, who died in 50's of cancer; infact the first cancer death, I knew. We live in Periya Chokkikulam, behind N M R family houses. Our opposite house neighbour, next door neighbours are all Saurashtras ! Near S H School, a family makes at home the famous Alagarkovil adai - I still must buy & eat the same, whenever I go to Madurai. I still love the saurashtra idlis, lemon saadam etc ! Oh, my dear Madurai & my Saurashtra friends ! I miss them all !! Love, Chithra.
Hi Supriya, I am not Sourashtra nor from Madurai, but the word Sourashtra conjures magice in my tongue and heart. In Trivandrum, there is a Sourashtra Hotel (no other name). They offer the most delicious puri set. The accompaniments are all typical, authentic Sourashtra fare. There will be a regular potato curry, a sprouted reen moong dal, and an awesome concotion of besan with green chillies, onion. I have been trying to get these recipes for ages. I know I have given very few details, but could you post any of these recipes? I am also looking for the special tamarind rice recipe made by the Sourashtra families- supposed to have less oil, but very yummy. Thanks. regards Vidya
