Soubhagya Gauri Vrata, or Soubhagya Gouri Vratam, is observed on the Tritiya (third day) of the Shukla Paksha (waxing phase of moon) in the month of Chaitra (March – April). It is dedicated to Goddess Parvati and is observed mainly by women in Andhra Pradesh and <?xml:namespace prefix = st1 ns = "urn:schemas-microsoft-com:eek:ffice:smarttags" />Maharashtra. The ritual is also known as Gauri Tritiya.

Married women pray for a happy family life and unmarried women pray for a good husband on Soubhagya Gauri Vrata. This vratham is observed by married women for the better health and longer lives of their husband.

Legend has it that Mata Sita performed Soubhagya Gauri Vrata to get Lord Ram as her husband.

Goddess Gauri is another name of Goddess Parvati. Some scriptures indicate that Lord Shiva finally agreed to marry Goddess Parvati on the Soubhagya Gauri Vrata day.

The ritual is inspired by Goddess Parvati performing intense tapas and rituals to get Lord Shiva as her husband. The legend of Soubhagya Gauri vrata katha mentions that Goddess Parvati observed the vrata to get Lord Shiva as her husband. After burning herself in Yagnagundam during Daskha Yagnam, Sati Devi was born as the daughter to Himvanth and observed a severe penance for Lord Shiva. Her penance was succeeded on Chaitra Shukla Thaidya. Since then, on that day Soubhagya Gouri Vratam is performed.

In Andhra Pradesh and some parts of Karnataka Soubhagya Gauri Vrat is also observed on Phalguna Shukla Tritiya. The main Gauri Puja is observed during Ganesh Chaturthi festival in all parts of India.

    Sowbhagya Gouri Vrata Vidhanam

Place the idols of either Lord Shiva and Goddess Parvathi or Lord Vishnu and Lakshmi or both of the divine couples.

Perform Ganesh Puja or Ganapati pooja.

Observe the main puja with ashtottara stotras and shodashopachara rituals. Chant the mantra “Sri Soubhagya Pathaye namaha” during the vrata. Offer food cooked with wheat as naivedyam. In the evening donate each bowl of honey, til (sesame seeds), ghee, jaggery, salt, and milk along with thamboolam and dakshina to a Brahmin. Give thamboolam (betel leaves, fruits, flowers, and betel nuts) and dakshina to five married women. Some devotees observe the vrata for five months (Falgun, Chaitra, Vaishakha, Jyeshta, and Ashada months ) and in fifth month (Ashada month) vratha udyapana is performed.
