Today I read a wonderful short story 'Within And Without' by 'Hermann Hesse.' I have to share the concluding lines of the story with you all.

"Behold, this is magic: to inter-change the without and the within, not by compulsion, not in anguish, as you have done it, but freely, voluntarily. Summon up the past, summon up the future: both are in you! Until today you have been the slave of the within. Learn to be its master. That is magic."

Writing about philosophical concepts in a story - a short story at that, requires amazing skills. The concluding lines were extremely sharp, crisp with a poignant message. Ultimately there is nothing outside self. Everything is within.

I feel our entire life revolves around this. If only we could move between the within and the without smoothly as said above, how very peaceful and beautiful life would be?

    Nice share Padma.

The fight of the known past and the unknown future in ones life troubles the present, to master that within is truly magical and if it is mystical all the more better.

Hello padma0604. When it's Hermann Hesse, things are bound to turn philosophical. Think of Siddhartha's inner journey. Besides, any short story or novel, if is good, is likely to contain a philosophical message, right? Directly or indirectly. It was wonderful to read what you quoted.

Having read you, I feel like sharing such beautiful passages from books or poems I've read. I think IL has a special forum for it.

    Dear Padma,

You have brought out the essence of the story in just a few lines. Yes, we can summon up the past, but can we summon up the future. When we are not sure of about us being alive the next moment, how can we summon up the future. We have to be philosophical in life, taking even the hardest knocks in life, with a pinch of salt, so that our inner peace remains undisturbed. Will read the book if I can get hold of it. Thank you.

Those were the concluding lines of the story. The story itself was superbly narrated. Thank you.
