    Hi Samhi,

I work as a test engineer in US.
It is not neccessary to know automation tools for being a tester. If you know any automation tools like Winrunner/QTP it will be added advantage. If you want to try as a manual testing understanding the business and testing process is enough.

    Hi Manju,

I read your message and wish you pen my thoughts abt your career. Hope you will take it in the right spirit.

First thing, you have got a small kid who goes to school. She may require your attention most of the time she is at home. right? Testing job is absolutely a good choice for you. But from my point of view, why dont you consider for Technical writer job? It doesnt mean that Testing is bad and TW is good. Both are equally challenging and good work.

But the main problem in Testing is that you may have to work odd times/weekends etc whenever needed. Ofcourse I agree even in TW, it is the same, but the amount of pressure you have in case of testing is more than TW. If you dont have understanding colleagues, your personal life and official one will be in trouble. I am telling this from my own experience. My colleague is in Testing division, and she has got 1.5 yrs old son. I have seen instances where in she was asked to come to office during saturdays and sundays. Since her teammates are really understanding, they used to take turns and come and do her work on weekends.

With regard to TW, you have opportunity to work at home. If you have sound knowledge in writing, there is always more chances of freelancing work. You can work from home, at your convenient time. Only thing you have to complete the work on the agreed time lines. This way you can pay personal attention to your daughter also.

Once your work is liked by companies, there will be more chances for you to work for multiple companies at a time.

This is just my personal opinion, decision is always yours.

Wishing you all the best for your career.

    Regards,
    KGP

    Hi Padma mam,

There are certain institutes which offers testing course and after completion of that course, they themselves send their students to some companies on deputation. Ofcourse, it will be like contract for one year or so. May be students have to pay for it, i am not sure.

These institutes approach IT companies and they send people on some terms and conditions. If one company's requirement is over, institute will send the candidate to another company. Out of the salary paid to the student by the company, certain portion will go to the institute as well. In this way, they make revenue and the student gets live working experience.

    Hi KGP,

I will be glad if you can throw some light on Technical Writing. Basic requirements and the institutes that offer such courses. More important, how is the future for this course?

    Thanks
    Poornima.

    Hi Poornima,

Technical writing is basically a documentation that is done for a software product/any product. For example, when you buy a TV, you will get users guide/ operations manual, which explains how to use the TV and explanation of various parts of the TV.. Creation of such manuals is the job of a TW.

Nowadays TW is much demanding one. The very fundamental requirements of TW is fair knowledge of english and some word processing tools like Ms-word. There are so many other tools which facilitates the creation of such documents.

There are some good institutes in Chennai and in Bangalore which offers TW course. Some of the institutes offer job assistance also. But whatever the institutes teach, the growth of the TW is the way how the candidates prove their capabilities.

In general, TW is on the high demand now and positively it will be there in the future also.

Let me know if you have any queries.

    Regards
    KGP
