Assistant Headmistress Maragadham was irritated once again, seeing Bhuvana late by 2 minutes. That was the third time in a row and she sternly marked 'L / ' in the attendance register, indicating leave for the morning part of the day. Bhuvana saw that, swallowed her tears and rushed to go to the assembly, without offering any explanation. She knew that it would be futile. During the short recess time, she shared that news with Hema and Sudha, her mates. "Oh! That demoness!", exclaimed Sudha and they all laughed. Feeling lighter, Bhuvana went back.

Maragadham had been a terror to all of them. Being there for a long tine, she made it her way to be an AHM and since governing took more of her time, she took the minimal number of classes. And she acted as the right hand to the HM and had an air of arrogance, obtained from her knowledge and experience and was always ready for a fight even if slightly aroused. Teachers played it safe to her and always chose to move away. She didn't care about that and was quick to pounce upon anyone for a small mistake of theirs. Many longed to show her what they felt about her, but kept quiet, out of fear.

That year, the sports day preliminary events were about to start then. As usual, events for the KG section were scheduled first. The incharge for the KG section had an emergency that day and did not turn up, though she called and informed Maragadham and the HM separately. Cursing her audibly, Maragadham said to the HM that she would take care of it. The relieved HM praised her for her extra effort. Maragadham then quickly saw who were free from the time-table there and called out Bhuvana [who had that only period free for the day]. Cursing her bad luck, Bhuvana took care of bringing the LKG children to the playground [within the school campus] and with two other teachers she made all the children to stay within their houses [Ruby, Emerald, Pearl and Sapphire].

The preliminary event started and Maragadham was standing as the orchestrator for the bun eating contest, picking the first 15. She would count out numbers loud and whichever chidren ate the most before she reached twenty were to be selected for the next round. Standing there proudly, she started saying the numbers aloud - "One, Two....". Before she could say "Five", a voice boomed. "Stop you fool!". Stunned, she saw from where it came from. The little boy was fearless adding, "Count slowly!".

p.s. - Almost all teachers and the assistants laughed out loud. Maragadham too, had to laugh with them.

Thanks Sunitha, for your immediate feedback to this and the other blog today. Feel very happy to receive them. And for your information, except for the school part, the child's roaring actually happenend. It was my brother's kid who said that to our family friend when he was trying to push him to do something faster, by counting. -rgs
