Rukmani lost her husband when her son, Rahul was just one year old. She stayed with her parents [she was their only child] till Rahul was 10, and they too had passed away one by one. Her parents saw to it that she had enough money to manage, before their exit. She dedicated her life to Rahul and was happy to see him grow along.

Rahul grew up to be a reserved person and was stubborn at times. Also, he appeared to be hardened a lot and never cried after he was just eight. Even on occasions when he got punished or hurt, he grit his teeth a bit, but never cried.

One day, Rukmani saw Rahul beating a child of his age in the neighbourhood. She became angry and called him in. When she pressed him for a reason, he did not give her any and just stood there firmly. She got nervous and worried. Unable to contain herself, she slapped him hard. Rahul was stunned, for she had never beaten him before. But he did not cry. With a hurt look, he just went to his room. Rukmani cried that night.

Few days later, when Rahul came back from school, he found Rukmani having a fever. He helped her swallow a tablet and after having bread they went to sleep. He woke up when he heard his mom's wails. She was running a high fever and was unstable. He quickly took a tablet and got a glass of water and tried to make her sit. It was then, that she had convulsions. He was really frightened and was watching her when her face went awry.

He had to do something quick, in order to save her from hurting herself. He took a spoon and tried inserting it into her mouth. It didn't open and blood was trickling from the sides. He slapped her hard with such a force that she opened her mouth a bit, just in shock!

Then, the convulsions stopped and she passed out. With neighbour's help, she was admitted to the hospital. The doctor appreciated Rahul for his presence of mind after treating Rukmani. When she opened her eyes after a few long hours, she saw Rahul and asked him to come nearby.

    He broke down and cried.

    Dear rgs,
Nice stroy as a whole. I thought you will justify rahul's action and a emotional bond between rahul and his mother. But the end was nice.
    great

Thanks very much for your nice feedback SudhaKrishna. I left them purposefully, for, I am sure that you can get those. Besides, I try to say as less as possible in stories these days. Hope it is ok with you. -rgs
