    Continuing from posts 281 & 285:

In English, “in this place” can be used in a literal sense to signify a location.

    For example:
As I stood before the Bodhi tree in Gaya, my guide pointed out that it was in this place, under this very tree, that the Buddha attained enlightenment.

With a slight variation, it can be used to mean “instead of” or “on his/her behalf”:
    For example:
Sunitha redecorated her living room. She took down the wall-calendar and in its place hung a watercolor painting.

    OR

The British playwright Harold Pinter was too ill to attend the Nobel Prize ceremony. His publisher Stephen Page accepted the medal in his place.

    Do you understand?
    :cheers

The correct English form would be: "I feel, I always make a lot of excuses".

"To give a reason" and "To make an excuse" are English idioms, that are very useful to remember.

"To give a reason" is used when we want to "explain" something or say "why". Usually, the reason is genuine, unless indicated otherwise.

    Examples:
    (1) Give me one good reason why I should not buy this flat - it looks great to me!
    (2) I cannot give you a reason why I don't like her - I just don't, OK?
    (3) I could not finish my English exercises. The reason is that I was busy with my relatives who are here for a visit.

"To make an excuse" is usually used when the 'reason' given for something is not genuine.

    Examples:
    (1) Rohit had tickets to the cricket match, so he made some excuse and did not go to work.
    (2) Don't make excuses, just tell them the truth. I am sure they will understand.
    (3) I was feeling tired, so I made some excuses to the hostess and left the party.

I know what you are trying to say, but this is not the correct use of the word "avoid". The word you are looking for is "ignore".
The correct sentence is: "Try to ignore it Sokanasanah".

Avoid (verb): to stay away from a person, place, situation, etc.
    Example:
    (1) I am not sure, but I think he has been avoiding me all week!
    (2) I avoid going there at night - it is not safe.

    On the other hand:
Ignore (verb): to pay no attention to something or someone
    Example:
"She is so critical - just ignore her comments!"

Here is an example with both words:
"If you wish to avoid accidents, don't ignore the traffic signs!"

Now, can you see the difference between 'avoid' and 'ignore'?
    :cheers

    Correction:
"Now, I am in a relative's house. I don't feel comfortable about using their computer."

    Correction:
"I don't like to use the browsing center either.
Without a computer, what can I learn / study when I am here?"

"Shall I recall what I have learnt?"
"Do you have any idea how I can practice?"
"I have time to practice early in the morning"

The best thing to do when you do not have access to a computer is to read.
The trick is to find something good to read. Indian newspapers and magazines are full of bad writing. They get worse every day!

    You have two options.
    (1) If you have access to a printer, perhaps you can try printing out and reading one short story each day. I will provide some links.

    (2) If you have access to a library, then try to find a good book. I would recommend 19th century and early 20th century writers for you. Actually, mid to late 20th century writers, (especially American writers) may be 'easier' for you to read, but harder for you to understand! Writers such as Ernest Hemingway or Raymond Carver wrote very direct, clean, elegant, minimalist prose. However, the stories themselves are very modern, somewhat 'plotless' and I suspect, a little tricky for you to appreciate! The easiest thing to do, is to go to the library and look for titles like "Classic English Short Stories" or "Great American Short Stories" or something like that.

You may want to try the "Harry Potter" books by J.K. Rowling, if you haven't already. The writing is not bad and you may enjoy the story line.

Here are some links to famous short-stories. Let's see if you like them!

    (1) http://www.americanliterature.com/author/w-w-jacobs/short-story/the-monkeys-paw
This is the story the author W.W. Jacobs is most remembered for!

    (2) http://www.americanliterature.com/author/guy-de-maupassant/short-story/the-necklace
Guy de Maupassant (1850 - 1893) was one of the most popular short story writers in the world. His stories have brought me a lot of pleasure - I have read all of them. He wrote in French, so the link is to a translation. However, Maupassant was a master of the short story. He wrote with a simple, elegant style. The stories are great for students of French and I imagine, in translation, they would be good for you too!

    (3) The Veldt - Ray Bradbury
This story is by Ray Bradbury, who died last year. He was a very famous American science-fiction writer. He is most known for his novel "Farenheit 451" which you must read sometime! "The Veldt" is one of his well known short-stories.

    Enjoy!
Don't forget to use the Cambridge Learner's Dictionary & Google when you need it!
