    SELVI AND CEASER.

Selvi was 5 years old. She thought she was a grown-up girl. If anyone called her a baby she would snap and say “I am not a baby anymore”.

She loved dogs. But she did not have one. When she told her parents that she wanted one they always said “NO”. Her neighbour had a German Sheppard and Selvi went to play with him. She giggled when he licked her on her face and neck.

Whenever Selvi saw puppies on the road, she would run after them. Her Mamma said ‘No Selvi you should not go after them, their momma dog will come and bite you”.

One day unable to bear Selvi’s pleas, her Momma told the gardener – Maali to take Selvi and find her a puppy. Selvi was so happy. She held Maali’s hand and skipped and jumped and walked beside him

How Will Maali find a puppy? He had an idea. He went with Selvi to the nearby slum. Surely they will find a puppy there. But like the dogs had sensed it, there was not a dog or puppy to be found. Maali was wondering what to do. Suddenly Selvi shook off his hand and started running and screaming saying “Look puppy. Look puppy”. As she went near, the puppy ran full speed and went into a house. Maali and Selvi stood outside the house. Selvi said, “Chooo Choooo Choo come here puppy come here”. Maali said, “No Selvi that does not look like a good puppy, let’s go and find another”. Selvi Bawled in a loud voice.

Four small boys in tattered shorts came out to see what the noise was all about. Maali immediately said “This baby wants a puppy”. Selvi with a sulky face said, “I am not a baby anymore”. Maali smiled and said, “This girl wants the puppy that ran into your house”. One of the boys went in and came back carrying the pup. The puppy was brown in colour and was very thin like he had not eaten for few days. He had 2 large ears. His skin was mangy and dirty. Selvi squealed in joy. She patted the puppy on its head and Maali said, “we want to take this puppy home.”.

Just then an old lady came there. He mouth was all red and she had no teeth. She wore a saree with no blouse. She wore large ear rings. She smiled at Selvi. Maali said, “this girl wants that dog, can we take it”. That old lady said “No”. Selvi started to cry and said “Pleaseseeeee”. Maali looked at her and said, “Please this child will take good care of it”. The old lady said, “from when it is a puppy we have fed it and taken care of it, it is like our baby, how can we part with it”. Maali looked doubtful and said, “Ok, i will give you Rs. 10/-, for your betel leaf, please give us the pup”. The old lady thought for some time and said “OK give me Rs. 100/-, you can take the puppy”. After bargaining Maali gave her Rs. 50/-. And Selvi had a dog. Maali carried the puppy and off they went home. Selvi kept blabbering many names to call him. She finally said, “Maali Anna we will call him Ceaser”.

    The puppy looked like this

    Day 1

Once home, Selvi’s Momma and Grandma were very disappointed with Ceaser. They asked Maali if he could not find a better, smaller pup. Off she sent Maali to buy lifebuoy soap to bath Ceaser. She took Selvi and made her wash her hands and legs and change her dress. Selvi quickly did as asked and ran to the backyard to see Ceaser having a bath. Ceaser was surprised as he had never had a bath before. Selvi’s mom gave two gunny sacks and some rags to wipe Ceaser. Ceaser ran up and down and rubbed himself on the gunny bags. Selvi clapped and laughed at the funny sight. Once Selvi’s dad was home they took Ceaser to the vet who gave him his vaccinations and health tonic. They bought Ceaser a blue colour belt and leash.

Once home Selvi’s Momma poured a glass of milk in a bowl and gave it to Ceaser. He never licked it and went and lay in a corner. After dinner everyone sat to watch TV and there BOOOM came Ceaser and sat next to Selvi and watched TV.

    Day 2

Selvi got up all excited calling for Ceaser. He was there curled up in his corner. Her mother had given him bread and milk, but Ceaser did not eat it. He did not eat the whole day. In the evening they called the Vet, who said he should be missing his home and he would come over it.

The minute the TV was switched on BOOOM came Ceaser and sat next to Selvi and watched it.

    Day 3.
Ceaser never ate of drank anything. He just lay in his corner. Selvi’s mother was worried, she said “if he does not eat, he will become very sick, he is missing his family”. Selvi quickly said, “We are now his family”. In the evening when the TV was switched on, BOOOM Ceaser came and watched TV.

    Day 4
Ceaser never ate or drank anything. He just lay in his corner. Now everyone was worried. Grandpa looked at Ceaser and slowly shook his head. Grandma looked at him and said, “poor dog, we are sinning”. Daddy looked at Ceaser and told Selvi, “we have tried everything, if he does not eat today, we have to take him back to his house”. Selvi said “No Pappa Noo”. In the evening when the TV was switched on BOOOOM came Ceaser to watch TV

    Day 5.
Ceaser never ate of drank anything. He just lay in his corner. The entire family were worried. When Selvi came home, her mother said “Ceaser is very sick, he has been hungry for the 5th day now, and do you think it is a good thing to do”. Grandpa said “Can you stay without eating for 5 days. How would you feel if someone took you from your family” Selvi now understood. Grandpa said “Come on Selvi, let us go and give him back to his family”

Just then Dad came; all of them went to the slum when they got Ceaser. They dropped him in the corner of the road, Ceaser ran so fast and entered his home. He stood at the doorstep and wagged his tail so fast and looked at Selvi and said “Bow Bow Bow” and ran inside.

Selvi was very sad. Her Momma said “But Ceaser was Happy, did you not see how he wagged his tail and also said Thank you”. Selvi felt consoled. Her Daddy said “Don’t worry Selvi, there will be a dog just for you and we will surely find him”

Selvi is not looking for that dog

    Dear UK,

Though you have posted the story in fiction category, it looks so real. Indeed, this can happen to pups if they are too young. They have to be fed like babies, that is by feeding bottle, not much at a time but at regular intervals, say after every four hour or so. Initially, if they are too reluctant to take it, they have to be force-fed.

Very nice ending! Btw, can't see the pictures.

    Dear sister @umaakumar
The story is an enjoyable read. you had narrated packed with words of emotion about Selvi and Ceaser. It is not only a poignant one but also it depicts your side of soft nature and pet loving.
Separation extinguishes appetite and weight reduction and affects metabolism in pets too.

    Dear Sir,
    Thanks for your feedback.
I wrote this story for my granddaughter when she was 3. She being in the USA, it was not possible for me to tell her a story everyday on WhatsApp. Some of the stories I would send by mail.
I have some more and will post when I have time.
    Regards
    Uma

    Dear sir,
    Thanks for your reply.
Yes separation is a hard thing for any living thing. Even plants when they are moved, they sometimes wither.
I was very fond of dogs. Many times I would carry a pup from the road and bring it home.
While I am not watching my Mom would send back the pup to its mother saying we should not separate them

    Regards
    Uma
