Rizwanur Rahman, the younger son of Kishwar Jahan, belonged to a lower middle class Muslim family that lived in Tiljala. He went to two of the best educational institutions of Kolkata and was a favorite of his teachers and his school and college mates. A brilliant graphic designer, Rizwanur worked as an instructor at a multimedia training center of Kolkata. He was a favorite of his students and the center considered him to be the best teacher they have ever had. He had a bright future ahead of him. But destiny had other plans. Does anybody know what happened next?
Yes, it was a big story. Unfortunately I was out of the country and missed the details. What actually happened?
Priyanka Todi, a 23 year old Hindu (Marwari) girl got admitted in the multimedia center where Rizwanur worked. She was the daughter of eminent industrialist Ashok Todi who resided in a sprawling house at Saltlake. Rizwanur and Priyanka got romantically involved with each other and they kept the relationship secret. On August 18, 2007, they got married according to the Special Marriage Act. A few close friends and colleagues of Rizwanur were witnesses to the marriage. The two families were not informed about the marriage at that point of time. Priyanka and Rizwanur continued with their regular lives. They did not know that their marriage would soon hit the headlines.
During the later weeks of August, Rizwanur informed his brother Rukbanur Rahman about his secret marriage with Priyanka. On August 31, 2007, Priyanka left her Saltlake residence for her graphic designing class at the computer institute. As the regular hour of her returning home went by, her mother got worried with the delay and informed her father, Ashok Todi. After some time they got hold of a letter that Priyanka had left at home for her father’s perusal. In that letter Priyanka had written about her marriage with Rizwanur. She had given all the details of her husband like his address and his qualifications. She had assured her father that she knew she would be happy with Rizwanur despite the contrasting social standards that they belonged to. The letter had some other very interesting points, which exposed the kind of person that Mr. Ashok Todi was.
Hi Piya!! You seem to know this case intricately. I remember the whole country took notice of this story at that time. Carry on with your posts- you are presenting the story interestingly!
In the letter, Priyanka had written that she knew that her father would not let her live in peace. But she had requested him again and again to leave her alone with the belief that she will be happy with Rizwanur. Rizwanur took Priyanka to his home on August 31. They wrote a letter to the police asking for protection from Mr. Ashok Todi, signed and despatched it. That night Ashok Todi visited Rizwanur’s place with his brother Mr. Pradeep Todi and tried to convince Priyanka to return home. They are also said to have talked with her alone when they persuaded her to walk out on the marriage. Priyanka denied and they had to conjecture better plans after they returned disappointed.
