anitha dont worry as long as he is drinking milk let him drink how often he wants. change of atmosphere from hospital to home probably is an exhausting change for him and he gets tired from sucking so instead he will feed lesser amts more often. So if he is supposed to drink 50 mls every 3 hrs that means he is supposed to drink 400 mls per day. so is he drinks 30 mls every 1.5 hrs he will actually take in 480 mls ... which is great! just make sure and burp him after every feed and hold him upright for some time.

if you have extra milk from pumping just freeze the extra for usage later or donation. premie milk is a premium that you can share if you want through milkshare, a yahoo group.

Pmahensa - Not every 1.5hrs he is taking 30mls dear.. His schedule changed completely since yday night.. He all of sudden took 65ml and since then he is totally screwed up I think..

His expected amount per day is 360mls(45mls for 8times).. Rithik took 390 on Sun only.. But since sun night I mean Monday morning onwards his in take reduced.. Like he is taking 25ml or 30ml only.. Am too much confused..

I'm sure you have your hands full. Regarding feeding patterns, mine too would do that most often. She wanted frequent feeds of lesser quantity. The ped told me that as long as she got the required daily quantity of milk she was fine. This was in the initial two weeks. After she hit the 5lbs mark, I switched to breast feeding but still she would feed from one side and then an hour and a half later feed again. I guess their tiny tummies can hold only so much!
If he is having enough of wet diapers, he should be alright. Of course, you can always call the nurse and check. I remember with my LO I would initially talk to the nurse on a daily basis. So much so that the nurse started recognizing my voice!

Anitha, I am here after seeing Laks response. What kind of a bottle are you using? What size is the nipple... just wondering if he is not overfeeding with the 65 ml feeds...When you tip the nipple into the mouth of your child and a bit of milk trickles in, his response will be to swallow. When he swallows he ends up bringing out more milk from the nipple into his mouth, which of course he will have to swallow. This can end up with him finishing his feeds very fast and being terribly overfed and other issues like reflux or vomiting with overfeeding.
Could you tell us how you bottle feed so that we can know if this is what is happening. This link will help you with the bottlefeeding to avoid overfeeding, if that is what is happening.
Pooja, you and I seem to have thought alike about preferring every 1.5 hour feeding. It seems a better proposition to me too.
Anitha, it is like this, you may feel really hungry during some mealtimes and not so in certain other mealtimes. Your child's eating will also vary. I found my DS ate more in the morning, even if he had been feeding every 1.5 hour in the night (which incidentally was his rhythm too till his EDD arrived.) It is very taxing on you, but your baby most certainly needs more than 8 feeds at this stage. Hang in there.

Hi Dears,

Iam back . Rithik started getting his feeds good now :thumbsup. He just took 55ml which was his routine.. The main problem was yday due to ped appointment somehow we didnt take milk with us and we changed his feeding timings which made him upset and he started punishing us just by taking 25ml etc etc.. Just I tried hard to notice when he is crying and kept track of times and found he is on diff timings and am feeding accordingly.. every 3hrs he should take 55ml from now on.. am awake just to make sure he is doing good..

yday night i didnt burp well and he splitted up a little amount and I learnt burping importance now..

Hi Ladies,

Quick updates about rithik.. He is now 5pounds and 6oz
Ped told he is quickly gaining wt and really good.
But I have following questions-

1. I hear a sneezing/stuffed noise from his nose often.. Ped gave me little drops and DH tried it but no use.. help need ed
2. Rithik completed 37weeks.. so is he considered full term now? my due is Jan 15th..
3. 45ml is not enuf for him now a days.. so increased to 55ml and then slowly to 70ml now.. is that good increase?
