    We are certainly not in a competition. However, if it could help, post your PoV, before reading any others' opinions on the threads.

    As for how people decide to either-stay-or-switch, that is, remain as they are or choose a new path/option, there is usually a switching cost. Ref. @anika987 's Do You Have A Choice Or Do You Have To Tolerate ? This applies to everything from a marital-partner, a job, a new hair-do, to the brand of beer or beedi that one consumes.

    "Why people don't switch ?" is a very relevant thing to ponder, in cases where people stay put, even though the misery had reached a penance grade in quality . Extenuating, pragmatic considerations would be put forward to justify continued penance, despite no heavenly intervention, and the granting of a boon. Or... there had been no counter offers to induce a person to give up the penance, and get on with life, such as this from the Viswamitra story:

    In Harvard University, the lack of a Menaka* wasn't mentioned at all in the 10 reasons people resist change. Ten Reasons People Resist Change

    [*Menaka is the attractive alternative that compensates far beyond the cost of the loss of penance, and expected boon from it]

    Thanks for the new angle of approach with Menaka illustration.
    People in comfort zone prefer to continue. But the adventurous and or ambitious one leave the comfort or discomfort zone . For them it is like water that finds it’s own level.
    Ten reasons people resist change - the page did not open. I shall try later.

    I am in complete accord with your views and I feel some people only get the boon of taking care of their parents. My brother and I live in USA. My sister and my parents live in same town in India. My parents don't need financial support but my sis and Bil are there to give physical support whenever they need. I'm not worrying about my parents safety in this pandemic because my sis and Bil have been taking care of them very well and I always appreciate their support from bottom of my heart which we don't replace with money.

    Sometimes reality shows on TV copy old trends and habits...

    @Rihana ,
    This was exactly my thought process sometime back. At some point, used to think my parents are responsible for so and so. They have conditioned us in such a way that we are hesitant to talk back to the elders etc. I would crib a lot about it.

    But now when the life has thrown bigger challenges at me to handle it, i know the importance of the upbringing. I thank my parents every day who have given me the strength to face these challenges.

    Funny...All of the other planets don't have oxygen, and the one lying in bed has an insufficient amount, and no bedside supply either.

    Handicapped hospitals is the subject of an old sit'com:
