How many of us know about the packed lunches readily available in the market..
Children are packed with Lays chips and Bourben biscuits, and they don’t mind Maggie noodles for the after noon, and when they come back the cup o’ noodle is always ready and some of the MTR products for the older children, who just have to heat and eat with those ready made chapathis which u need to put it into the microwave or heat it in a tava..

The morning is usually the cereals, of different flavors and milk also packed ones, no fresh ones as no one has the time to go get it, the fridge is stacked with all packed foods during the weekends and very few are able to really sit down and cook. During weekend you want to relax and not slog out into the kitchen, then how about some ready to fry and serve patties and chops while we watch the movies…

Ever spent a moment on what are the preservatives that go into it, no time would be the expression, it tastes good and that is it, grand mother’s would send some pickles or there are so many off the shelf, and branded ones to help you tease your taste buds. People come over so u need to do some extra stuff in the kitchen, or more still cooked food get ready into the fridge sealed to be heated for a week, varieties could be more and you have a choice to mix and match, with only rice to be made..

While avoiding making fresh ones, we go for all the spreads needed to just roll on the slices and bake or heat and eat it, so many varieties of cheese spread and buns of different flavors, now the bread with spice or sweet with so many flavors you have with berries and cherries, and nuts and spice, cilantro, mint, garlic u name it is there, so all you need is to get some tomato based spread or mint flavored with a little pickle and all done..

Now you may wonder why this survey and we all know it, very correct, the flab is also accumulative and settle very well with all these, so we need to enhance the taste like the cucumber with mint remember to the children, they save a lot of unnecessary fat, salad is a must in your child’s tiffin box, enhance that with many flavors natural, boiled corn is a very good energizer or if you have the time you could just roast and give it with mint or other green chutney or butter and let the children develop something nice at the same time an aversion to the pizza and burgers and toast and cheese and so on..

Now coming to the India flavors many of us order from outside especially the dinner part, somehow the morning moves with a lot of activity and lunch is also on the same go, but come night and we want something hot on the table, with someone giving us that, the oil that goes into the noodles, or sabjis looking so red could be colored to make it look attractive, the soups may have the sodium glutamate which gives you a headache in the morning, there are many commercialized effect introduced to enhance the smell but could be harmful in the long run..

The children of these homes are a great target to all these, so let us make a real effort in making something for all, try to re organize, or even better get a good cook who will get it ready for you, the home food is any day great and if done well could keep our unwanted fat and diseases at bay for longer period. Any more suggestions in these front..sunkan

    dear sunkan ji,
i agree..i am mother of 3 yr old.he daily makes demand to carry chips ,bread etcin his tiffin as all his friends bring these.i spoke to some mothers to stop sending bread, noodles etc every day ,but the excuse is that atleast they eat something .is it the right approach?is our only aim to fill kids belly or to provide balanced food.i too sometimes send noodles etc but try to put lots of vegs so that it is atleast part nutrious.
also ,another thing i have seem is that many times small kids fall ill with cough, cold or stomache ache etc which at their age is natural, so the ist thing parents sacrifice is giving fruits.like a mother said she never gives banana ,curd to her daughter as it will give her cough .they will give a kid fridge chilled coke or water but avoid fruits saying that it is ok the child is taking medicine.

    dear pragati,
we have discussed at large here about the ill effects of coke, which is being used as pesticide in karnataka by the farmers, and so how could it be good to the intestine in the first place, any way it is better to consult a good dietician to help children know about what is good for them rather than what they eat. In the long run their health has been shaped by us and so if they do not appreciate initially its ok, better to sit out this issue for longer periods than to give into their junk delicacies..sunkan
