1. Regarding Indian International Schools- I cannot comment about the pressure or workload given to Students. However, one thing I can tell you, Children who are studying in Indian schools, They Simply love & enjoy going to the school. Almost 75% of the subjects are taught in CW & only 25% are given as H.W. These schools are suited for those who want to go back to motherland or those parents want their child to study the syllabus which they had studied or who have more inclination towards Indian Educational System!

2. The Local School is quiet good too in all aspects but again only 60% are taught in CW & around 40% are given as H.W. As a result, some parents feel the pressure on them. Their participation is very essential & important in the <?xml:namespace prefix = st1 ns = "urn:schemas-microsoft-comffice:smarttags" /><st1lace w:st="on"><st1laceName w:st="on">Local</st1laceName> <st1laceType w:st="on">School</st1laceType></st1lace>. The HW does involve lot of projects & other group work activities. The one main feature of this local syllabus is that they follow <st1:City w:st="on"><st1lace w:st="on">Cambridge</st1lace></st1:City> curriculum. A student is tested in all aspects & unlike in Indian syllabus here you can never expect the questions from the prescribed book. The questions in the examination are all of general type. However, remember 6th grade they will have their public exams (PSL- Primary School Leaving Certificate) which is a crucial factor for a child & for parents.

3. Yes! If you are looking out for a cosmopolitan ambience.... The other international schools like UWC, OFS, etc. are all well equipped with modern facilities, the teachers are mostly of white nationals, the stress is comparatively less & coming from US your child can quickly adapt to these schools. The advantage is if you people want to go back to west. It will be a smooth transition. Again, the fee is very very high.
If you spend around $1000 per annum in the local school you need to shell out $20k per annum in these International schools. If you don't mind, paying more on kids studies. This is the best options.

Well, as I mentioned to you earlier, every school has pros & cons. When you come down here-, do a good research. Select few schools, go directly & see how they function- sometimes what you see in the website may be different from the reality.

is it still accurate, because GIS has announced fee hike March 2008 which you can find in Google:

So it may mean DPS fee is equal or lower ?

Apart from fee, a thing to compare is how are their results.:coffee

Need feedback on pap schools

hi,
Are the pap schools here good ?
Do they discriminate Indian kids.
I read in singapore moms forum that these schools are quiet good and children improve a lot on their vocabulary .
But most of my Indian friends do not have a good opinion about them..
could someone advise pls

Long time...no see?? How're you doing? I think this one is for you 3-yrs.old daughter right.

Regarding PAP schools, I too have read a lot about in the straits times...untrained teachers. Poor standard of English etc. However, teachers & centres differ from place to place. Two my friend's children are studying PAP school in Serangoon area. They are happy with it.

Advantage- it is near to their home, less fee around $100 & less strength.

Disadvantage- most PAP schools don't have second language (Tamil or Hindi) you need to teach mother tongue at home. Remember this is a challenging task!

Generally, for kindergarten local people will go for church affiliated schools, montessori schools or schools like sarada kindergarten (Bartley road) or saraswathi kindergarten (yishun & toapayo).

How is the standard of education in singapore(particularly maths).
Please guide me in this.
I am planning to put my dd in GIIS.
Which locations are near to GIIS school. Give me a list of locations near the school(both branches).

My husband and myself are Indians living in the US for the past 10 years. We are now thinking of relocating to Singapore next year, so we can be closer to home. My daughter will be 6 yrs in Sep09. How are schools there ? What is the educational system ? Is it more academic like in India or do they concentrate more on the over-all development of the child like in the western countries ? Please let me know you thoughts and feedbacks .

Also I believe the school year runs from Aug to June, what do most of the "good" schools offer ?

Hi shivagami,

My childrens are studying from Kindergenden. My elder son is in Junior College and Younger one is in Secondary 3. as per my experiences i say Singapore Schools are good and they take good care of childrens studies and they keep the track of the childrens and we are free to talk to teachers.

schools near by bedok south ave 1.

hi! friends ,

we had recently moved to bedok south avenue 1, r there any schools near by our place? now my daughter is going to the school near by pp but its quite far and it takes 1:50 min by van . she is getting very much tired . please provide me info . she will b going to nursery next yr. And how long it takes by van to DPS and GIIS ?

nice to catch up with you after a long time....not able to send private message since i have yet to reach the 50 or so....postsshakehead

anyway i remember the times when we were a very few who were active in the singapore ladies section......its nice to see so many active members now.

regarding my sons school i had a thought about giis queenstown..... but i could not gather much feedback about it.

some pap schools ( like the one near mine) offer indian languages from k1.

As you advised i have zeroed in on a church affiliated school which is also an affiliate of raffles institute....hope it works out fine
