More About Taking in Proteins :

Protein is derived from the Greek work, "Proteos" meaning "to take the first place".
It plays significant role in a activities of living organism.
It is present in our skin, muscles, skeleton and in body fluids.
23 Amino acids are present in Proteins.

Pulses contain about 20-20% of Protein.
Methionine, the limiting Amino Acid in Cereal Proteins is present in good amounts in Pulses.
Thus Cereal-Pulse combination improves Nutritional quality of the diet.
This combination is the most economic way to provide protein.

Source : "A Text Book of Foods, Nutrition and Dietetics" by Raheena Begum

The typical Cereal-Pulse combination is traditionally followed in India. So we need not break our heads to find out the right combination :idea

e.g. 1.Iddly (by itself contains both cereal & Protein - Rice & Dhal) with a chutney thats made with Dhal.
    2.Similarly Dosa.
    3.Pesarattu.
    4.Rice with Sambar.
    5.Chole Bhatura.
(Do add ur favourite to the list)

So all that we need to do is learn & follow the recipes our moms & grandmoms made (ofcourse we can slightly alter it to meet our needs in the fast moving life). But, make sure that u dont remove any main ingredient :)
Next time, u have ur meal, check if there is Cereal-Pulse combination !!!

any idea about black eyed peas beans? Eating black-eyed peas on New Year's Day is thought to bring prosperity.

Black Eyed Peas are beans which belong to Legume family, also known as Cow peas, white kidney beans or cow gram. When pressure cooked and seasoned makes a good healthy evening snack.
    given in different languages:
    Vellai Karamani ~ Tamil
    Lobhiya ~ Hindi
    Bobbarlu,alsandhalu ~ Telugu
    Alasandee ~ Kannada
    Vella Payaru ~ Malayalam

it has lot of fiber, low in sodium, High in iron, High in magnesium, High in phosphorus, Very high in thiamin, High in zinc.

note: it can be made in the same way as chole recipe.
making vadas using these beans are also very tasty. if we want add other dals like chana dal and moong dal too.
i am giving you the recipe link for making vadas:

Mahanandi Black-Eyed Pea Fritters (Alasanda Vada)

add mint it gives different taste.

    Hello all,

PEAS : Its one of the common Pulses used in India. There are two types : Green & Yellow Peas (picture below)

    Peas.JPG
    [IMG][IMG]

Green is almost available at all our homes and give a beautiful colour to the food. Yellow is not so common.
Both can be cooked well. Microwave cooking is also possible.
Fresh Green Peas are cooked easily, while dried ones should be soaked over night.
If u forget to soak it over night, just boil enough water, add the Peas and it can be cooked in about an hour.

Frozen Peas are readily available in market. We can buy them when fresh Peas are off seasonal. Its little costly. So when u find Fresh Peas are at low cost :
    Just buy them in bulk
    remove the outer skin
Check if the seed are not wet
Put them in a transparent plastic bag
    freeze till use

They are exactly the same as the Costly Frozen Peas!!!

Add in ur favourite recipes with Peas.....
