Dear Chitvish Enjoyed the latest proverbs, some havn't heard before. Proverb No.14 , reflects an unfortunate failing in human nature that has been ever present but never rectified inspite of the repeated instances . Reading the proverb brought to mind the shortstory of Bharati Gaja that was posted on Bharatiyar's birthday by a member. I was just viewing the previous set of proverbs , the one that set comments about concubines and monkeys flying from all quarters,leading to some highly amusing skirmishes between a ladies gang and the one-man-army of Varalotti. Your version likens the virtuous dharmapatni to a Kuyil Silai(nightingale statue). I have always heard it as Koyil Silai ( a sacred idol ) which seems more appropriate. Wonder which is correct. My dear Vidyasarada ! Welcome to this thread ! In my personal opinion, the one-man-army V R will any day outsmart the ladies gang ! It is either Kuyil Or silai. There are 2 versions Kuyil pola OR Silai pola. In fact the third version which my maid says is " Kili pola" ! It is not kuyil silai. Sorry if I had not made myself clear. Thankyou for the F b, VS. Dear, I am late this time..was little busy.. We say in Malayalam "pazhanchollil pathirilla" , how true it is! I think you got the meaning.. Kuyil-Kili-Kurangu ! Dear Pazhamozhi-Pettagamay ! When I read your maid's version - Kili -it was a AHA ! moment. Try reciting that proverb with Kili as the first simili. It sounds so apt, so crisp, so colloquial, so rapier-like, i think that must be the orig., correct version. Kudos to your maid ! While on the matter of varying versions, i'd like to share with you a funny saying which has two versions in our own family . The Thanjavur branch recites it like this Neeeetti muzhakki !) " Kondaanum kodutthaanum onnaagi kulaava, kottu-melakkaaranukku kona -kona izhutthathaam" ( Transliteration: "The one who recieved and the one who gave have become friends while the drummer becomes epileptic." The idea is, when two quarreling parties bury the hatchet, they conveniently forget the mediator and leave him in a lurch. The scene to be imagined is a wedding , a happily resolved sammandi sandai and a forgotten and unpaid drummer, drumming away till he gets epileptic ! ) The North-Arcot branch of the family says the same proverb thus: " Undaanum udutthaanum onnaagi uravaada, kurippu sonna kudumiyaanukku kona-kona izhutthathaam" ( dunno story behind it !)
