Police in the northern India state of Rajasthan say they were stunned when a man showed up at a police outpost holding a bloody human head in one hand and a sword in another.
The head was that of the man's daughter, chopped off because of her "indecent behavior," Umesh Ojha, deputy superintendent of the district police, told CNN.
Investigators say the man, Oghad Singh, had paraded the head through the village on his way to the police station.
Singh's daughter, Manju Kunwar, was in her 20s and was living with her parents after divorcing her husband two years ago. Her father accused her of acting indecently with other men.
Authorities say Kunwar's mother is a farmer who was working in the fields at the time and was too distraught to talk. Singh works in a marble quarry.
The beheading happened on Tuesday in Dengar Ka Guda, a village in Rajsamand District about 400 kilometers, or 250 miles, from Jaipur in the state of Rajasthan.
Kunwar's head and the rest of her body were cremated according to Hindu tradition, police said.
India is filled with extremes on many levels, including how women are treated. In India women hold some of the highest positions in society, from company CEOs to the president and speaker of the House, but this case highlights another side of India, one in which women still suffer the consequences of long-held traditions that govern their behavior in Indian society.

This month India topped the Thomas Reuters Foundation poll as the worst place to be a woman among the top 19 economies in the world. The foundation cited abuse, killings and discrimination on a scale unparalleled in the other developed nations.

    very very horrifying!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
but on the other hand it gives a feeling that the moral conduct is given highest place in our Indian society. In today's world with most western way of thinking influencing our cultural, where live-in relationship, extra material relationships, gay relationships, etc are the order of the day. Our Indian ancient rules and culture was formed in a manner to sustain the structure of the society in progressive way. But because of absence of proper spiritual leaders, breaking of cultural rules, and leaving our basic principles has brought about this distorted behavior, where the cultural rules are taken to extremes.
Solution to this and many such problem ? yes , back to our basics............ but the question is where are the true spiritual leaders to guide us.

Can't open a newspaper in peace today. So much negative and awful news in every page.

MMS harrassment ( if girl will not marry the man), Honour killing (if girl marries wrong community man), bride burning ( if girl marries correct community man but without dowry), Murder ( if girl marries in correct community with correct dowry, but objects to man's Ex.M.Affair !) like they just want some reason to show violence. And then the usual quota of Rapes, Acid attacks and Moral policing and Eve Teasing.

Root cause, lack of good influences during childhood. Our education system is a laughing matter. Our public figures are rotten role models, our judicial system is toothless, so nobody has any fear. And look at our movies glorifying violence .

It is not just worst place for woman, it is becoming worst place for everybody.

    Nandu,
It's really horrific news. This honor killing has been going on for too long. Women in India have no say and now they are not even safe in their own homes.
I am proud to be an Indian woman. These news always sadden me as they make us look so backward and prejudiced.
I hope we can make it a better place for our children in the future. The punishment was such crime should be very hard or else this will never stop.
