Pongal and Makar Sankranti the cosmic festivals.

Almost all festivals of Sanathana Dharmam (commonly known as Hinduism or Hindu religion) are related to a particular cosmic / astronomical event. Even the Sun’s revolution and the travel around Galaxy, and the universe are all related as Yugas, Kalpas and Brahma’s day and year!

It shows the cosmic connection and great knowledge of astronomy and very high degree of proficiency in Mathematical/astronomical calculations of the Rishis. Or may be a knowledge acquired beyond the means of the five senses!

The group of Hindu festivals that fall on the 14
    [SUP]th[/SUP]
January or a day before or after, throughout the Indian subcontinent namely Pongal,(Tamil Nadu) Bihu,(Assam) Bhogi,(North India) or Makar Sankranti(South India) celebrated all over India is a festival that celebrates the annual occurrence of a cosmic event that affects every life on Earth. The difference of a day either way can easily be explained by astronomers.

This is the day on which Sun moves from Vrichigam to Makaram, indicating the peak of winter and beginning of the decline in winter for the Northern Hemisphere. The Sun’s sojourn towards north starts! We call Uthrayana Punyakalam. (Holy time of Northern Sojourn).

Again warmth comes back to the most populated Northern Hemisphere and all activities flow, life can begin again (for the winter hibernating creatures).
What a lovely joy and celebration for mankind, particularly for those who live close to equator like Indians! The Sun which was going further and further south stops and reverses its journey back to North! The solar pendulum, the fountain of all energy comes back.

Let us welcome back the Sun and worship. Pongal is just that as also other Indian festivals around January 14[SUP]th[/SUP].
Happy Pongal, Makar Sankranti, Bihu, and Bhogi to all in our beloved IL family.
