    Dear Shel28,

I second Amrita's request about not missing the Jantar Mantar.
Jantar Mantar has the Sun Dial. It is also known as the Samrat Yantra or Brihat Samrat Yantra, which means the huge sundial. It is a striking yellow structure on the right. It has a 27 m high arm which is adjusted at an angle of 27 degrees. The other yantras in this observatory are employed to observe the various planets and stars.

The Mishra Yantra helps to ascertain the longest and shortest days in the year. One pillar overshadows the other in December while it does not cast any shadow at all in June.

Jantar Mantar of <?xml:namespace prefix = st1 ns = "urn:schemas-microsoft-com:eek:ffice:smarttags" /><st1:City><st1:place>New Delhi</st1:place></st1:City> is the largest and the best preserved observatory till date. It remained functional only for the first seven years after its erection. During this period, observations made each day were noted down.

    hello Shel,

If you are touring <?xml:namespace prefix = st1 ns = "urn:schemas-microsoft-com:eek:ffice:smarttags" /><st1:City><st1:place>Delhi</st1:place></st1:City>, Red Fort or Lal Qila is a must-visit place. It was constructed in the walled city of the then Old <st1:City><st1:place>Delhi</st1:place></st1:City>.

The Red Fort is one of the most popular tourist sites of <st1:City><st1:place>Delhi</st1:place></st1:City>. It is a prominent emblem of <st1:country-region><st1:place>India</st1:place></st1:country-region>’s sovereignty. It is this place where the Prime Minister of India raises the National Flag of India on the 15th of August, every year. This event takes place on the rampants of the Lahori Gate of the fort.

The Red Fort lies along the <st1:place><st1:placeName>Yamuna</st1:placeName> <st1:placeType>River</st1:placeType></st1:place>. The river fed the moats that encircle most of the wall.

Red Fort is located opposite Chandni Chowk in Old Delhi. It was constructed by the Mughal Emperor Shah Jahan. The wall at the north-eastern corner of the fort is adjacent to an older fort called the Salimgarh Fort which was a defense structure built by Islam Shah Suri in 1546.

The construction of the Red Fort began in 1638 and got complete by 1648. Red Fort served as the capital of the Mughals till 1857, when Bahadur Shah Zafar was exiled by the British. They subsequently used Red Fort as a military camp till <?xml:namespace prefix = st1 ns = "urn:schemas-microsoft-com:eek:ffice:smarttags" /><st1:country-region><st1:place>India</st1:place></st1:country-region> won independence in 1947.

Red Fort was designated as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in the year 2007.

You must visit the Qutab Minar. It is located at Mehrauli in south New Delhi. Qutab Minar is the tallest brick minaret in the world. It is an unique example of early Indo-Islamic architecture.

This minaret was built in 1206, but nobody knows for sure why it was built. Some say that it was built to signify the victory and the initiation of Muslim Rule in India, while others opine that its purpose was to call the faithful to the prayer.

Qutab Minar is open everyday from sunrise till sunset. The entry costs Rs 250. Entry for children under 15 years is free.

    Anandisingh,

Thank you for the detailed information. :) If I'm correct it was built by Qutab-din-aibak.

You are right Shel28. I forgot to mention that the tower has five distinct stories and is covered with verses from the holy Quran. The carvings are intricate.

Close to the Mehrauli heritage area is the Garden of Five Senses. It is located in the Said-Ul-Azaib village, <?xml:namespace prefix = st1 ns = "urn:schemas-microsoft-com:eek:ffice:smarttags" /><st1:Street><st1:address>M.B. Road</st1:address></st1:Street>, near Saket.

The Garden of Five Senses is a tranquil haven where one can escape to from the crowd and noise of the city.

This is no ordinary garden. As the name indicates, this garden has been designed to awaken all the five senses. It is a sprawling twenty acre site.
