    Hi all,

    I have just moved to the US.When in Chennai i was using Femilon Contraceptive pills.I got around 4 packets of them with me and i will soon be running out of them..

    1.I want to know wether Femilon is available here?
    2.Is it available OTC?
    3.Are there any other brands available OTC or should i consult a Gynecologist here?

    Brownie, welcome to the US.

    Birth control pills are not sold OTC in the US. The only kind of birth control pill that is available OTC is the emergency contraceptive pill Plan-B.

    You do find other types of contraception available OTC like male and female condoms and spermicides. To get a prescription for birth control pills, you would need to see a GP or specialist. Make sure your insurance covers prescription birth control pills, most insurance plans don't. Hope this helps.

    Hi Jyothisri,

    Thanx a lot for your reply.So i have to consult a GP for getting the pills.Do i have to visit the GP for every months supply or can i use just one prescription ?

    Are the pills very expensive here?

    Hi,
    You have to visit a gynec for bc pills as they are available only on prescription. usually insurance plans cover it but still there will be a copay of $20 or $30 depending on your insurance. Gynec usually gives prescription for 3 or 6 months and you can call their office for prescription refill which they can send to pharmacy directly. Ob-gyns want us to visit once a year for a pap smear and that time you can get a new prescription too.
