Just came in to add, I forgot the advice i gave my maid which she regularly follows.
there was a time she was going through a very lean phase and she has three brothers who go to work and give her some money, (I talked about my maid in a blog ) and she has a sister to be married. I told her that she needs to put 10/50 rs from each of the brother in a piggy bank along with her contribution for the sister's marriage. she can save that in the box and deposit it in the postoffice RDscheme. so she has been doing this for the past 3 years and has some decent money in her account.

just to tell you that the 10/50 out of a piggy bank is not a small amount. an RD at 10 rs could be 728.90 after 5 years. so imagine 500rs/1000rs. small systematic drops make a huge ocean.(quarterly compounding..yet another proof of power of compounding..)

while monthly income scheme has a maturity after 6 years.where the minimum is 1000 rs at 8% intereste upto a maximu of 4.5lacs. you get a 5% bonus too.

the reason for putting this here, is piggy banks and post office savings would work out beautifully.

Nice thread Sri. Yes, I still have piggy banks, not one, not two, but a couple. I love collecting them. I have ceramic ones, plastic ones, metallic ones... :)

The ones I put my change in also have locks on them thanks to my DH - he takes the money out of it without me knowing about it, and replaces the money in my piggy bank with love letters, telling me "My love is your real treasure... what's in a few materialistic $$$ notes?" :rotflSo now my piggy banks have little locks on them - I tell him he can deposit his love in the same slit via which I put my money in, and I will forever treasure them in my locked piggy bank :coffee.
