    Physician Heal Thyself

Yesterday the newspapers reported the death of a cardiologist Dr. Prasanna aged 45, of KEM Hospitalafter suffering a cardia

arrest. The doc had returned home after a workout at the gym when he suffered the attack.

Dr.Vijay Surase, a cardiologist at Jupiter Hospital, said Dr. Prasanna had no Cardio-vascular history, and was a teetotlar. He

lead a simple life, and was a vegetarian.

The doc would know about the state of his heart, than we know about our hearts. And yet he died of the disease he was expert

in.And the poor chap was a saint in his eating and drinking habits and yet he had to go early.

God knows how his family will cope with his early demise, of the installments to pay of the house, in case they have taken a

loan. But one thing is strange. Doctors dying of the disease they are experst of.

REcently two doctors of cancer died of cancer themselves. Strange really.Does treating the disease , they somehow contract

    it, or what ?

My point is, should not the doctors live up to a ripe age, while we mortals die earlier. Doctors should live to 80 or more,

healthy till the end, for they know what is happening inside their bodies, they must be taking regular tests, and eating and

    drinking judiously than us mortals.

My grandmother died at the age of 85. She was diabetic and had heart and other ailments. She outlived her diabeties doctor,

who died at age 45 or so, a skinnyu chap who measured in grams what he eat, and was a great exerciser. Her cardiologist died

also around 50, strange eh !

I guess stress takes its toll. Maybe they work too hard to make the mark, and are associated with too many hospitals, working

late hours, which they can avoid, but i feel the more the doctor comes home late, the more successful he is looked upon as.

i know of a few doctors, who have their own succesful clinics, and still they are associated with some top hospitals, for

from there , they bring in those patients to their clinics. And it gives them a good name that they are associated with top

hospitals, but i guiess this comes at a cost to their health.

i feel, if the doctor dies , the world will not come to an end, it the doctor realizes this, he can take it easy and work at

his own pace, and turning away patients if he wants to. if u want to serve each and every customer, then u are straining yr

health. And doctor remember, u can pick and choose yr clients, and u should know how much money u need to earn. Why play with

yr life, when u aer already earning so well.

And these days, i have heard here and there, that there are targets for the doctors, and they get paid acc to the business

they get the hosptials, like other businesses, it is target based, the more u earn for the hospital, the more u will be paid

    and vice versa.

Would love to hear the views of all my friends here, i guess everyone will have a lot to contribute of their own expierences.
    Welcome one and all.

Hope the start to the new year has been good for all of u.God bless u all.

I have come across many Radiation Oncologist's who passed away due to Cancer.

Healthcare is deifinitely commercialised very much in today's world. Hospital acquired infections for patients is a proven fact and it does not spare doctors also.

At the end of the day, everybody needs to earn their bread and butter. But when greed becomes more than need, is when the imbalance starts occuring in any system.

The doc would know about the state of his heart, than we know about our hearts. And yet he died of the disease he was expert
They became doctor because they studied it and chose at as their profession, apart from that they are normal humanbeings like any of us.Doctor is neither God nor Demon to decide his fate.
And the poor chap was a saint in his eating and drinking habits and yet he had to go early.
    Well,
My 2 uncles Top Officers in Govt. services died because of cancer they got from drinking and smoking.
One was a Topper in IAS prelim. in 1970's,a scholar,a living encyclopedia,a very loving person.
Had he not addicted to drinks-life would have been different.

so here the doc. died not because of saintly habits-it could be a genetic problem
    - on the top of it,Poor guy may be was too stressed with his work!

    Hi kamalji,

Science says that the failure of organs and therefore death is programmed in our genes.that means, without any external influences, our death is already preordained nine months before we are born ,that is on the day of conception.
Cancer is just multiplication of cells, no one yet no one knows how it happens ( stress, they say ,can be one of the factors)so it can happen to anybody.
I like to think of it this way .:)
Doctors are experts in the human body which is again just a machine. like how one goes to mechanic for repairs and spare parts so do we go the Doc. Sometimes, WE are repaired sometimes, we get our parts changed and if nothing can be done, we are thrown away. what say?

Kamalji, whatever they do, whatever they practice, doctors are human beings too with karmas of their own. Being a doc does not make a person immortal and since they are mortal, they have to die of something.

Yes, the medical field is getting very ugly and commercialized. The need to provide business to these "corporate" hospitals makes docs kill themselves quite literally as well as figuratively. Only rich patients or patients with insurance can afford to go to these hospitals. Others simply cannot dream of getting treatment there.

I hear in the U.S its lot of stress and difficulty to practice as a physician. Many people I know even discourage their kids to become doctors
The insurance rates are very high for doctors and too much stress and tension!
btw where are the jokes? :thumbsup
I am going on strike here.:)If you dont post jokes no reading your blog :hiya

    Dear Aspire,

Cancer is not an infection and neither is heart disease. it baffles me to see doctors dying of the same disease of which they are experts at.Strange really. You rightly say, when greed becomes more than need, then troubles start.

What is the use to flog yrself to death, whn u are earning well.

    Regards

Could be what u say is true, just strange that docs die froma disease they know well, and that they take so good care of themselves.

Sad about yr two uncles, what to say.

i would say stress, as u too have said, for i see them overworked, attached to so many hospitals, besides having their own clinics.

    Regards

    kamal
