    Peter Uncle<?XML:NAMESPACE PREFIX = O />

My Bhabhi has an uncle ,Peter Uncle, staying in the heart of London. He has his own Bunglow, these days worth around 6 million Pounds, around 50 crores today.

But this is not about his riches, this is about the man, his kindness, his big heart, and about other such matters.

Peter Uncle outside, and his Bunglow, where his two daughters stay on the upper floors. He stays on the Ground floor. The UK Govt even offered to build him a free lift to go upstairs, but he refused as he dosnt go up ever.

I met him in 96 the first time.Me,brother and cousin were returning from Spain from our Business trip .We had a BA ticket, and we landed in the evening, and our flight to India was the next day morning.Instead of staying in a hotel, Brother decided to visit Peter Uncle and stay with him for the night.

Peter Uncle is today around 80, paralyised below the waist, and on a wheelchair. Then he was walking with a limp and with a stick. He was very happy to meet Brother, and welcomed us very warmly as also his lovely wife Bala.He used to drive a Jaguar, and took us to show us London by night, and took us to a casino, which was fun.Wel lost but a little amount, u guys know me, and I changed just 50 pounds, and lost thatBut we had plenty of free drinks , ciggies and snacks at the Casino, and had a wonderful visit.

This blog is about what the UK Government does for the Senior citizens, above 65, and disabled people, which I doubt our Indian Govt would do for us here in <?XML:NAMESPACE PREFIX = ST1 /><ST1:COUNTRY-REGION><ST1:pLACE>India</ST1:pLACE></ST1:COUNTRY-REGION>.

My brother and Bhabhi went on a cruise last month, and visited Peter Uncle, and brother was telling me all this which amazed me no end.And I just received the pics from brother today morning and here is the blog dedicated to Peter Uncle.

Bathroom Renovation – A few months back the UK govt sent 3 people to Peter Uncle’s house, to see if he is comfortable.A Doc,Contractor, and Engineer came by appointment, and asked Peter Uncle to show them the Bathrrom, and asked him to sit on it, and how he cleans himself, how he uses the soap dispenser etc.

They found things unsatisfactory, and sanctioned him a 5700 Pounds Pot,(around 4 lakhs plus), which is completely computerized, cold and hot water from below, a hot or cold blower to dry him.And they had the handles changed to stronger ones, so he dosnt fall sitting or standing form the pot.And changed the tiles on his floor to non slippery ones. All at Govt Cost.

The new shower Seat, showers and the
handles that they put for him so he dosnt fall down.

Wheelchair – Peter Uncle used to use the ordinary wheelchair the Indian type manual. They gave him a computerized one, which is battery operated and he can go 10 miles on the streets on it, with brakes, speed and even reverse gear. They repaired the Ramp from his house to the gate, and from his gate to the Road.

<ST1:COUNTRY-REGION><ST1:pLACE>UK</ST1:pLACE></ST1:COUNTRY-REGION> is one of the few countries that the Cops there don’t carry a gun, just a baton.and to anyone they stop they call “ Sir “.Imagine an Indian cop doing that to us.

    DRUNK COP

A True story recently Peter Uncle told Brother.A woman driver lost her way, confused she saw a cop,and called him.She lowered her window and asked him for directions which he complied with.

The lady on reaching home, called the cops, and told them, of the help offered by the cop, and his name, and told them she thought he smelled of booze.A police car traced the cop, took him to the police station and tested him.He tested positive for alcholol.

The judge took a very strict view that if a cop can be drunk , he should be severly punished. He was just two months away from retirement and pension and other benefits. He was dismissed and all his belt and badge taken down and dismissed very badly.

The judge did not pay attention to the cop’s version. His son had died two months back in a road accident, and he was very disturbed by it.Plus the cop was off duty, and only then he had his drinks.

This created so much iproar in the <ST1:COUNTRY-REGION><ST1:pLACE>UK</ST1:pLACE></ST1:COUNTRY-REGION>, that all cops went on strike, and they offered and gave one days salary to the dismissed cop.

Dear Friends , what does one say after reading all this.We blame <ST1:COUNTRY-REGION><ST1:pLACE>England</ST1:pLACE></ST1:COUNTRY-REGION> for ruling us, but can we ever dream of caring for our Citizens or Senior Citizens like UK.I would love to hear your views.

I was very impressed with what I heard, and this blog is dedicated to Peter Uncle the man with the Heart of Gold.God bless you Peter Uncle, stay happy there in UK, and don’t ever dream of being a patriotic Indian and coming and settling down in India. We know what happens to the lonely old people, the newspapers are full of it.

All your life u pay taxes whenu work and under 65, but after u turn into a senior citizen, its pay back time for the UK Govt. This is what i call Heaven, where there is law and order, where cops call u Sir,adn where cops dont carry Guns.Even if the children dont care for u, dosnt matter. Its another matter that Peter Uncle's kids are gems, i have met them, and he is lucky to have a great family, and Govt Support, which makes life a living Heaven.

I doubt it , if u can a better deal upstairs.

Wow Kamalji, that was awesome service by Uk govt to Senior citizens! :hatsoff
And coming to India we can see so many senior citizens waiting at pension office just to get there small amount of pension to lead life!

I don't have words to say after reading about Peter Uncle and the way govt is treating him. Off course we love our country India but can't even dream of such things to happen here..

    Kamalji,

A very informative post. I agree that abroad these things are given more importance. They are more aware of the comforts of their citizens and hence lot of efforts are put in it.

Here i think we citizens need to be more pro-active.

A couple of weeks ago the newspaper had flashed the salary of the top cops in pune. It was mere 54k out of which there were some deductible and the final amt. in hand was about 46k.

Some of the chowkies here are just bare shed made of tin...no amenities like restrooms or drinking water. What do you expect them to do ...sometimes they have to do double shifts at the spur of the moment.

The above are not complaints but the scenario / circumstances under which they are working.

    Dear Friend Kamalji

The western countries have the benefits of smaller size, lesser population and the good governing systems starting to a town to the whole country. We lack this all. But thank God that we haven't lost the democratic setup like our other neighbors have.

Kamalji, Obviously Peter Uncle is well off got a huge house and still gets welfare payments and benefits at state expense! With due respect to his disability, I think such benefits should be reserved for the really poor!

    Dear Kamalji,
Rakhi wishes to you! May you be hale and healthy and entertain us with such lovely and humorous blogs! My wishes to Bhabi too.
Today, there was an article in TOI about NRIs who went back after a short stint in India. The reason is, they say that their experience was honoured and only 'whom they knew' counted than 'what they knew'. Many wanted to bring up their children in this culture but found the education system is very theoretical. The most important fault they found with India is- no work culture, no punctuality etc. I don't blame them for going back. We who stay here have got used to all these but NRIs cannot cope with these choatic things.
First fo all, let us hope that child labour is stopped- then we can think about Senior Citizens. Kerala is better in this- not much child labourers. Bangalore seems to be worst- I see children working almost everywhere.
It was nice knowing about what a Govt. could do for its senior citizens. I envy the English.
