Thank you Between both of us , though same religion , H insists god based names and I am neutral. I like names which are just one word and not multiple words , not very long , shouldn't be very difficult to pronounce , should not give way to obvious short/pet names out of the original names .
when we were expecting, considered the following while naming our kid Name should be short and easy to pronounce by all (non indians too) . we did not want to keep a pet name for our child (as is the norm among people from my state) The meaning (if there is one) should not be negative Name should not rhyme with any bad/swear word Name should be such that it cannot be shortened or possibly used by people (colleagues, classmates) to tease the kid in future We did not want names which were very religious.. like god's name We also did not want names beginning with letters in the beginning or end of alphabet series. Hope this was useful
I thought about this as well. It reminds me of something my dad told me when I asked how he and my mom came up with our names (my siblings and I have somewhat uncommon Punjabi names). He said that when choosing names, they didn't want something that would be shortened (i.e. "Sunny" for Sundeep). He told me a story about a former colleague of his. The gentleman was Bengali and had a traditional, somewhat long Bengali name, which his colleagues shortened to the pet name of "Bish." He said that after a while, the name stuck and even friends and family referred to him as that. "Bish" is also the Bengali word for "poison." I also agree about avoiding religious names. Personally, I'm not super religious, so I wouldn't feel too comfortable with an overtly religious name.
Congratulations, @Nylaa! @chasingdreams, good list! Here's an old thread that's worth looking through: Baby Names To Avoid?!
Thank you! @Archanaanchan @Amica I highly appreciated the link @Amica! There are so many names to avoid! Thankfully, most of those hadn't even crossed my mind. Posters in that thread made a great point about names being mispronounced. Mispronunciation is something I didn't even take into account. So far the types of names we've ruled out: --- Names that can be shortened to a pet name. --- Overly common names. --- "Trendy" names. --- Names with an overt religious association. (I hope I don't offend anyone with this. There's absolutely nothing wrong with religious/religion-based names. However, my dh and I are of different religious backgrounds, so we'd prefer to avoid anything too religious.) --- Names with negative associations.
I m going to strike out Sandeep... One of my client often made fun of a team member in this name. Often said ... San-deep!!
