Some information about kolam...many of you might know :)

Cowdung is also used to wax the floors before making the kolam..its usage is reduced to a greater extent in cities but is still prevalent in villages... cow dung is believed to have antiseptic properties and hence provides a literal threshold of protection for the home. It also provides contrast with the white powder. ;-)

Decoration was not the sole purpose of a Kolam. In olden days, kolams used to be drawn in coarse rice flour, so that the ants don't have to work that much for to long for a meal. The rice powder is said to invite birds and other small critters to eat it, thus inviting other beings into one's home and everyday life: a daily tribute to harmonious co-existence. It is a sign of invitation to welcome all into the home, not the least of whom is Goddess Lakshmi

    Hi Swaran,
A nice thread with information on kolams.
I have always made kolams both morning and evening -however small it is- when I was in NE India, my friends there would see that and I would proudly and happily explain about our tradition to them.
I live in an apartment here, but I make a small kolam with rice powder in the little space inside the entrance- and maa kolam on festival days.
Mostly I make 3x3 kolams or small free hand kolams or simplified versions of padi kolam.

    Hi Swaran,
A Nice thread with Good information on kolams.
During my college days, every day I used to draw kolams.Every day I used to change patterns, dot kolams, Lines kolams and rangolis etc.The previous night of Pongal festival I used to make Big Kolam with different patterns.
A big groud will be there in the morning on Pongal day to see my kolams.( Good memorable days!!).
Even now i make a small kolam with rice powder, make variety kolams.
    Mostly I make Border kolams.
