Please feel free to use my space, I wouldn't mind receiving visitors. Regarding your question to Satchi, I too had wondered and assumed that she was about to visit Cheeniya's archive. So, I encouraged her, only to feel most embarrassed later on when I found out where she was off too!!

Of course, you have underestimated the sense of humour of ALL your and cheeniya sir's FANS.
(OKAY, after all these years do I still have to shout from the rooftops that I am an ardent fan of both. No, I do not mind doing that if you think action speaks better than words.)

The fans were all just being busy during the weekend...for you see, that is the time they devote for their family. Rest of the days they are having fun in their own private world 'IL' pulling someones legs or getting their's pulled even longer.

so rest assured that we totally enjoyed the post. and May I , Oh puhlease... May I hope that you are in this frame of mind all through the year? :cheers

Dear Mindi,

Thank you for joining the fun. I can see that everyone has taken things in the right spirit. And how can we be a family if we do not pull each other's leg once in a while? I do wish to continue in this mood, though right now I am in the middle of a losing battle. With God I think. Kolkata has been horribly cold this winter, colder than any winter I can remember. And my age being what it is, cold weather is the last thing I can cope with. So, I am not exactly in a Bertie Wooster in spring time mood, though I am looking forward to spring. They say it's at least one more week away.

Of course, I am totally in the dark about countries like Concordia and the like whose names are mentioned only as postscript in the UN attendance register. Remember that classic Peter Ustinov movie ‘Romanoff and Juliet’ in which he figures as the Chief of Concordia?

How can I possibly forget Ustinov's Concordia? A great comedy, falling in the category of The Great Dictator in my opinion. I don't mean Chaplin's acting vs Ustinov's of course. But there was a thematic unity I think. Both movies asked the most difficult question that politicians have always faced. What the devil are you fighting for? If power is what one fights for, then s/he should realize that no weapon is more potent than LOVE to win people's hearts. And once you have won people's hearts, you are the most powerful man/woman on earth. But who would ever understand this simple truth, let alone the political people?

Coming back to the point, when I read that I had ‘accused’ you of pulling my leg, my mind went into an awful spin. Nobody accuses anyone of pulling a leg since this particular activity is done by in great camaraderie usually. To make my point clearer, I’ll give you a small example. Gandhiji is in the thick of freedom struggle and one fine morning in order to give further pep to his struggle, he announces boycott of ‘videshi’ goods. Immediately the whole country rises in support and consigns all their videshi possessions to fire. Chacha Nehru leads this movement in his favourite locality in Allahabad. There he observes a young chap consigning to flame his brand new videshi shirt which his uncle had brought from London only a week earlier. Chacha Nehru is very impressed. He goes to the youngster, pats him on the back and tells him that he sees all the markings of Gandhiji in him and he is certain that someday, he, that is the youngster, would take over the freedom struggle from Gandhiji and lead it. Now, what will be the reaction of the youngster? He’ll of course tell Chacha Nehru, ‘Chachaji, please don’t pull my leg’. Will Nehru rush to his desk and shoot off a letter to is daughter Indira Priyadarshini saying that he has been accused of leg pulling by a youngster?

Sorry about that digression friend. No, I really don't think that "leg pulling" should belong to the category of crimes, though sometimes, as I watch what's happening these days, I begin to wonder. As far as your leg pulling saga was concerned though, their pullers (right from your birth) had gone a little too far. They had, according to you, stretched your legs beyond their normal length. This information conjured up a fascinating image in my mind you see. Cheeniya walking over to his office wearing his freshly pressed trousers and his astonished boss asking him why he had arrived for work in his shorts! Now if something of this nature had happened to you, then whoever was responsible for changing the length of your legs had to be pulled up for sure. S/He need not have been punished I agree, but I felt that s/he needed to be lectured to about length related issues. Of course, whether this should be looked upon as an "accusation" could well be linked to "length" again, of the lecture I mean, not the legs.

I have to admit at the same time that an alternative idea had occurred to me as well and this one could, for all I know, lead us to Penal Codes, of Concordia, of India, or of any other country that you might wish to choose. Isn't it possible, I proposed to myself, that Cheeniya is suffering from an illusion? Perhaps someone had used a pair of scissors to cut off his trouser legs, thereby according to his trousers the appearance of shorts? His office boss and everyone else who mattered saw this clearly, but it was Cheeniya alone who missed it out. It's all a question of relativity I thought. The case of a pair of shorts might well be presented as an overly long pair of legs too! No wonder the Guinness guys want to get things straight. A PAN card number is important. If you don't possess one then they might conclude that you are merely a school boy wearing shorts. School children don't possess PAN cards as we know. And in this case, your long leg hypothesis could be rejected in favour of shorts. On the other hand, may God help a person posing as a school boy, but carrying pantfulls of PANs!

I recall reading Russel's views on relativity where he said that if we were to live in the sun instead of the earth, then it is quite possible that, Copernicus and Galileo notwithstanding, it would appear that the sun did move around the earth. I have struggled hard to consider the matter, but I continue to dwell in deep, dark ignorance. I lacked the bravery to build my home in the sun, it's as simple as that. It's a case of lacking the courage to learn I guess. Or else, I should have been able to settle your trouser leg cum mortal leg paradox to everyone's satisfaction.

Coming to the Guinness guys, I was mentioning about the kind of inconvenient details they used to seek before declaring a winner some two decades back. I had some personal knowledge of this as a guy close to the place where I was working had claimed their attention for the longest moustache he had. The whole lot of them descended on the tiny village and pulled every hair of his moustache to make sure it was genuine.

I know what you mean. I never tried to grow a moustache for no other reason than this. But didn't you grow one in the past? Or do you still wear them? Did your moustache too fall under the Guinness scanner? Sorry friend, life's tragedies could be truly bottomless I am told.

That’s pretty decent of you to dedicate your creation that was meant for your grandchild to a grandpa. As long as both are ‘grand’ how does it matter to whom it goes to?

And talking of Chettinad, I must tell you that Chettinad is famous for not singing but for totally a different kind of oral activity which is eating. Their cuisine has acquired such fame that there are at least a thousand of them in Chennai! So no ‘Tana’s there but only ‘khana’!

I once knew a Chettiyar (spelling right?). We wrote academic papers together on matters that humanity had no use for. This Chetty guy was no food lover and whenever he invited me for lunch or dinner, I used to shiver. The way I spoke, teeth chattering, voice quivering, might have produced the impression that I was performing a tana at the sight of the inedible khana. And now you tell me Chettinad is khana wise famous. Well, what can I say? Why don't we make a joint trip to this dreamland, fill us up with khana and compose a gana about our adventure and sing it for IL?

Incidentally Laurel and Hardy fought in films only to make their fans laugh. Otherwise they were the best of buddies. Do you know that Laurel never performed after Hardy’s death despite getting lucrative offers from producers of repute?

Since you reduced the frequency of your writing when I was only away for a toilet break, are you suggesting that you are the Laurel of Indus Land and I the Hardy? I used to think I was still alive. But then, one cannot be all that sure, right? Appearances can be deceptive. I recall having reported on this dilemma once in I, Ghost.

Dear Kerman,

I don't know how to thank all of you enough. I wanted to make the ILites laugh, and for once in my life, I think I succeeded in accomplishing what I had intended to. I feel truly satisfied. Regarding Cheeniya's writing skills, I admire him no less than anyone else at IL. The opportunity to communicate with him is one of the best things that have happened in life. And then all the others showed up. I have from time to time left the family and vanished into the wilderness. But I have always come back, always ... This is one great family indeed.

Yes, my grandchild may see this someday. Who knows? In the meantime, let the others enjoy at least.
