    Friends!

Something that I wanted to share with all of you.

It is easy to open/save this zip folder using Mozilla Firefox. IE didn't appear to be all that friendly. I can assure you though that you will miss a fascinating treat if you decide not to view the file.

I will try to send the original file to the IL Team. If I succeed, you might ask the Team to email the file to you. Otherwise, in case you wish it that way, I can email it to you myself. It is not difficult to find my email address on the net. Try Dipankar Dasgupta + economics + indian statistical institute.

    Dear Oja da,
The first time i heard song I didn't understand the meaning of but when I played it again and again I understand. One in life produces such amazing work, and doesn't get noticed. That is life, you do good things and get no attention but then do bad things then get noticed.
I will probably get a few thumbs downs but I will like to say one thing, life is huge journey until you get to your destination you will experience every felling possible.
Thank the Lord for Artists like Vincent and Don McLean, they take us to tender places we can't even reach in dreams.
    After I googled,
this song is about an important post-impressionist painter, Vincent VanGogh- his art, and his worldview. VanGogh, in his lifetime, was an overlooked painter. Those lyrics are painted upon the backdrop of the most captivating, harmonious and evocative music. I do not have words to express my emotions and impact the song and the paintings made in me. Thank you for sharing such awonderful and unique piece!
    with love

Thanks Ojji! It's absolutely beautiful. Reminded me of Thomas Gray's Elegy written in a country churchyard..
Ofcourse for many people like Vincent, this world and people were never meant for them but do you think they really cared? I don't think so. They came here, did what they wanted to do and just left - without even turning back once...

Yes, its beautiful. Though I have seen this before, it was enthralling to watch again.
Vincent Van Gogh is one of my most favourite artists. And the story of his life is so heart rending. The movie "Vincent & Theo" , based on the letters exchanged between the brothers van Gogh, is very moving and i recommend you see it (if you have not already ) to appreciate the depth of brotherly love.

    Dear Oj-da,

Woke up this morning to the zip file sent to my mail! Enjoyed every bit of it and though early morning here, had stars in my eyes and not ordinary stars either!

Van Gogh was an artist par excellence. DonMclean's song is simply poignant. The impact is enormous when such stars collide!

Sad as to why so many great artists go through such harassed lives. Now don't tell me that only such turmoil can bring about such fine works. I would hate to believe that.

Never understood this thing called Life!

    Dear OJ,

Beautiful and poignant...a musical tapestry into which are woven Van Gogh, his pictures and his troubled life.

Thank you so much for sharing this with us!

    Cheers,
    Sowmya

    @ padmini

There are two kinds of people I guess, the ordinary ones like us and the extraordinary ones like Van Gogh. The first category can perhaps be judged by their little achievements. The second, the one to which belong people with genius, cannot be judged so simply. Sometimes, I tend to judge them by their failures -- failures in their missions impossible. They see things that no one else has seen and try to make people understand how extraordinary the world is. They usually fail, fail because people begin to appreciate them long after they are gone.

It's the failed class that truly matters in human affairs. The rest of us are of little consequence. We are happy in our inconsequence, they are tortured by their monumental greatness. They suffer and yet they cannot compromise with mediocrity.

I doubt that they would ever look back. How can you, if you are convinced that you have seen and realized the truth? No, they cannot give up - can never give up.

No, I haven't seen the movie. I sent the attachment to my son and he too says he had already seen and heard it. But like you, he thinks it's worth going through again. I do not know much about painting, but I think I will try to pick up art appreciation as a hobby. An eminent Bengali painter called Shri Atul Bose told me once that Van Gogh's genius lay in his ability to create colours that no one else could. I loved the song and the paintings.
